Hello All,
I'm considering a Steve Wong chip for my 86' 911. First thing I'd like to check is whether I have the 2K or 4K chip. In order to do this I must access the Motronic metal box under the driver's seat. I'm sure it's probably easiest to remove the seat and then do the work but can it be done without removing the seat? I've gotten as far as the following pix but am unsure on how to proceed without breaking something. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Kato. ![]() I doubt that the labels tell anything about the chip inside but here is a closeup of those: ![]() |

I just slid my seat all the way back and was able to get in there with no problem. If I recall, you just have two 10mm bolts holding it to the floor. They're easy to remove.
The wiring harness pulls off pretty easily. -Scott |

Be careful with the connector. It can't be pulled straight off of the DME. Look at it closely, it is "hinged" into place by hooking the top into a slot and swinging the connector into place. It sould be easy to remove without removing your seat. You will just have to reach into some tight spots to get to the nuts.

Also ... once the 10mm bolts are out I can remove the entire box? - as long as the connecter at the front is removed? |

Kato, the 082 DME you have is from the later 87-89 Carreras which could be either a 4k 24 pin chip from the earlier 87s, or a 8K 28 pin chip from the later 87 to 89 Carreras. It looks like your DME was replaced sometime in its past. Since the DME could have been from an 87 Carrera, you will have to open the DME to determine the pin count. Full instructions are online and can be downloaded here:
http://www.911chips.com/C1INSTR.pdf You do not ever need to remove the seat to access the DME. You will need a socket wrench with a 2" long 10 mm socket to access the 4 nuts securing the box. Just make sure to slide the seat all the way back and upwards to give yourself room. |

Yes, the white doo-dad is the connector (34 pins, if I recall)
and yes, the whole DME box will come out with the nuts and connector removed.

I found that there was one nut that could best reach by sliding the seat all the way forward and reaching it from the back seat floorboard. The rest were easy if the seat is all the way back and up.
