do i need a silencer?

I was reading princetons last post and, after I got some pretty serious oak over his lack of exhaust system, i came to the conclusion that I would really like to run no silencer. my engine is a 3.3 single turbo. can anyone here tell me how loud a 3.3 single turbo engine would be without any silencers? I can (and have in the past) cope with a relatively loud car. its not going to get many miles so if its bearable...........but it would be nice to hear from some people who run no silencers and turbos. Ive heard that the turbo really quietens things down.
heres the link to princetons automotive 'hard porn' pics

Dunno about a 930 but I tried my car sans silencer after hearing a sound clip of Steve's (masraum) Carrera. It sounded awsome I'm not sure it'd be suitable for my dailly driver though. Leaving my house at 8am with the silencer in place is nuisance enough for my neighbours.

Andy my friend has a 930 with a dump pipe and it sounds just like a 934 nice and deep.

A honda with a fart can will stand out in trafic more then a staight pipe 930. Also it does not drone or resonate at all.

steve when you say 'dump pipe' is that the term for an almost non existent exhaust system or are you talking about the pipe from the waste gate?

Andy.

Well, it doesn't hurt to try, but when I cranked up my 930 engine with no muffler it was wayyy too loud. Undriveable, in my opinion, unless you're looking for trouble from the police.

I think it depends on were you live and drive. I built a straight pipe (no muff) for my 930 and it was way to loud around town. On the highway (above 3000 rpm) it wasn't bad. But cruising arond town at 2000 rpms it was very annoying. I have a small muff now.

On the highway it wasn't bad.

- uh, for you it wasn't -- for the poor people living nearby, it was. At high speeds the sound has a harder time traveling back to your ears...

I have one of those now installed in my car ('84 930 single turbo).

It is loud (mostly outside and a higher speeds) and you may be asking for 'unwanted attention' (ie police), I do plan to install a muffler.

I got stopped in Arizona and issued a 'warning ticket', nothing yet in Nevada but I'm sure I will get stopped (probably a few times) this weekend on my way to Dunkel's swapmeet as soon as I cross into California (on my way to get the muffler).

Just my two cents.

Straight pipe isn't as noisy as straight pipe on N/A car but it's quite obtrusive. Car will sound like big rig truck.

I recomend short straight-trough muffler. It won't cst you any power and will takethe edge from the drone, pushing it to the right side of "tolerable"

You might want to do something like this (the small version):

I was thinking along the same lines as your picture goran. something 'straight through' that will take the edge off. is that one of your own?
