Newbie here: comments and suggestions

Hello Pelicanites

I have been lurking for a few months, okay since about mid July. I thought I'd finaly get around to introducing myself and my Pcar so I can get to know you and then start in with the questions.

I'm in the Louisville Kentucky area (still looking for a good Pcar shop) and currently have a 69' 911E. I guess its kind of a 'bastard' . It is a 2.4 MFI with a 901. She wears 16x7 Fuchs that are in great condition.

I'm currently rebushing the entire suspension (polybronse), replacing wheel bearings etc. Upgrading to S struts with Bilstein insert, newly rebuilt aluminum S calipers with metalmaster pads, new turbo tie rods, and new rear spring plates.

When its all put back together I will be looking for someone to do the alignment and corner balance. Any suggestions in my area? The car will be a Nice day car, Auto X and DE. I will Auto X ~ 6 or 7 events, DE 2 or 3 and drive it on the street when the VW GTI gets boring.

Oh, I've learned my lesson and am posting a few pics. Be kind, she's old and I'm just getting started with her. Oh, I also think I NEED a Duck Tail

Welcome to the board. Very nice car! I agree with you about the duck tail. Can't help you with area suggestions, since I'm not from there, but good luck on the board.

Welcome to the Forum. Nice ’69E. Don’t ever think of it other than the great 911 it is. Wow, a 2.4E in a light weight ’69 coupe and still has the 901 to boot. Sounds like fun.

A few weeks ago someone asked about independents here in Denver. I spent a bit finding most Porsche places and experts in Colorado here. You might consider doing the same in the radius of Indianapolis – Cincinnati – Lexington – Nashville – Evansville and all points in between.

If you have been lurking, you know that I promote you becoming your own best MFI expert. You can learn from and teach the pros but you know the facts. Get together with other MFI owners and share knowledge and tools. Are you a PCA member? Very worthwhile.

Tell us more about the suspension changes. What was it when you started?

When you get it back together you want all the adjusters and hardware to be perfect. You want it to be where a pro doesn’t have to fight rusted hardware or reluctant adjusters and can concentrate on proper alignment. This way you can take it to a shop (or race team) and have it aligned and corner balanced.

Where do you live?
I was born and grew up in Louisville. My dad (89) still lives there; Crescent Hill, just off Grinstead Drive. He owned a Porsche when I was a kid. His most recent was in the ‘80s.

Best,
Grady

Egad! Another '69 E with a tail in Guards Red! Mine's still got the 2 liter, but had been converted to Zeniths by a PO. I too have been thinking of losing the tail for a stock lid, but a/ have other priorities, and b/ most people who see the car like the look of it. Since I'll not see the high side of 100MPH with the car, I don't worry about the aerodynamic balance.
What seats are those? Interior looks tan. I like that. At some point the stock seats in mine got swapped out for some cloth Recaros with an orange/red stripe pattern.
Hope you have as much fun with yours as I'm having with my old E.

Nice car! Damn, I thought I had the only long-nose in gaurds red. Learn something new every day.

I agree with the duck tail too.

ENJOY!

Yes, it is A LOT of fun! Goes very well and sounds amazing. I love the 2 in 2 out exhaust, nothing in the world sounds like an air cooled flat six screaming your name with all its might at 7k

Thanks I'll give it a look. There are a few shops that "work on" Pcars but I really want someone that knows how to set one up properly. I don't want to chase proper suspension setup for the next two years.

Yes, I am a PCA memeber, but I haven't attended any of the local events or meetings. I guess I should change that. I really do want to learn more about the MFI. It seems deceptively simple. Doesn't seem that complex, then you read the difficulties some owners have getting it right. My car runs great so I'm working on getting the suspension and brakes sorted out to match the current Horsepower.

The suspension was pretty much stock 69 911E when I got the car. It has through body weltmiester sway bars with adjustable drop links. It had very rotten rubber suspension bushins and worn out inserts (boge in front and Koni in the rear). It is all being replaced at this point. I'm not going overkill but it will be nice and stiff and ready for maximum G's with the 7" wide rubber that she will wear. I haven't decide on what tires to run yet.

I am replacing all hardware with new. In fact, I bouth it all online from http://www.boltdepot.com very easy way to buy a large assortment of fasteners.

I live in the prospect area. I know the area where you father lives. When did you leave LA (Louisville area)? If your dad is still a Pcar fan, I'll go pick him up for an event this spring :-)

Well I guess there are two of us in Guards Red with a narrow body and a tail The seats are tan factory low back seats. I'm not sure if they are from a 69 or not. I actualy have 3 sets of them if you'd like a set let me know. I"m sure we could work something out. They are vinal on the bolsters (if you can call them bolsters) and suede like fabric in the center sections.

I do have the front lower air splitter and would really like to switch to a duck tail in the rear. Once the suspension and brakes are up to snuff, mine will see the plus side of the "ton" every chance I can safely do so.

Hey 69 NineEleven. Have to Agree with Yasir about Mike. Also try Terry at Automotion on East Broadway. Tonys on Poplarlevel is Highly recommended for alignments. Not to take work away from these guys.. try some of the work yourself. I find it very rewarding . Great car. Dan

Can't respond to a good balance in your area... But I can say you do "need" a duck and although the 7's look good, that car screams for some deep 6's...

Hey thanks for the info for a professional alignment. I'll look them up. I know the guys (and Jessica) at Automotion from my affiliation with the local water cooled VW club. I guess it never occured to me to have them work on the 911.

I'll post pics of the suspension and brakes going back on the car and what it looks like when completed.

Some Deep 6's would look great, but I don't have $$ in the budget for another set of Fuchs. Too many other items that need attention first. Like that Duck tail

Shaun, your 69 looks great in silver. Hell all 911's look good in silver.

Blue82coupe - Are you still in the Louisville area?

While your 2.4E is properly running, use the opportunity to establish some baseline CMA data for your MFI. At every opportunity measure the cranking compression, cylinder leak, exhaust gas, and ignition timing and advance. These are things you can do yourself and you will want the tools sooner or later. Collecting data over a long period will alert you for impending issues and you gain the skills.

As I said I was born in Louisville. My parents first house was on Cherokee Terrace next to the park. In about ’47 dad bought 344 S. Peterson Ave. on the brick hill and eventually about 18 acres all the way down to Baregrass Creek along the north side of Grinstead Dr. Great playground of springs, lakes, forest, hills, trees, caves, etc. And a second driveway where I could tinker with cars.

Fortunately I had gone off to school when I-64 was built and screwed up the area down by Beargeass Creek and our fun and easy bike access to the park. The good news is most of that is now has a wildland easement and will never be developed – thanks to my parents. Our old house changed owners a few years ago for just under $1M, I think my dad paid $7500. The Bickel quarry is now all ‘90s condos.

After The Tornado, My dad put together a collection of everything between Wildwood Pl., Hite, Hillside, and S. Bayly – complete with spring house, garden and forest – just more manageable size for his age. At 89 he is still a Porsche enthusiast with a clear mind.

Fortunately The Tornado didn’t damage anything at 344 but it decimated beautiful Cherokee Park and the 150+ year-old beech trees.

Sorry for the digression but all of those are also Porsche roads for me. Aah, laps around Cherokee Park. Do you know what your kids are doing? In my 9th grade class of 16, three were killed – all alcohol related. We all got shipped off to boarding school and my hands on a RSK in 10th grade. I was sold.

Best,
Grady

The point here is that three of my good friends were killed at 16 – dead forever, I will never see them again. I can still remember hunting quail with them (in Prospect) , snagging their swim suit off in the LCC pool, going to pre-deb parties with them, helping each other in LCD class, building tree houses and underground forts, and so much more since pre-school. Sorry, we all miss you guys. You didn’t make it to college, Bachelors, and the rest of life.

Let’s not hijack this thread.

Best,
Grady
