Window Channel Alignment Help (a bit long)

After a couple of years of the passenger side window being very difficult to lower, it finally quit on me.

I pulled out the regulator and replaced the infamous pivot pin (our host unfortunately doesn't carry it) as well as lubricated all the pivot points and replaced the upper outside felt. The regulator itself works fine (aside from a slight "clicking" noise when its at the end which I believe is from worn gears).

Once everything was back in place, the window rolls up fine and comes down about 1/3 with no problems. At about 1/3 down it starts to bind and becomes very hard to crank. It does go down, just with a bit too much effort.

After a bit of looking, lubricating, re-checking and 50 or so ups and downs, I noticed that if I very lightly hold down the top of the back edge of the window as it goes down, vioala, no binding.

This leads me to believe that the channels themselves are a misalligned allowing the window to tilt a bit (right side tilts up (right when facing the window from the inside)). In looking at the channel allen bolts, they seem to be made to adjust.

I've loosend them all and tried several different positions to no avail. I finally gave up and will attack it again tomorrow.

Is their a special procedure or trick to getting the channels to aligh properly? I'm at a total loss.

Please take this with a grain of salt....I'm not certain if this applies to earlier 911's....

There are bolts that adjust the parallelism (if that's a word) of the window. Mine was rolling up 3/4 of the way and then slowing down for the final 1/4 of the trip and they never quite made it to the top (back was slightly higher than front). It turned out the window was "pointing" just a bit into the front channel. I was able to adjust it so that it was parallel with both channels and then it rolled up and down smoothly.

Your comment about pressing on one end of the top edge to free it up brought this to mind.

Thanks for you reply.
I've been able to loosen the lower left allen bolts inside the door which hold the left channel in place as well as the two bolts which are accessed through holes in the edge of the door. Once they're loosened, I can move the channels towards the inside or outside of the door which only seems to make the binding worse.
I believe I need to move them closer together or further apart in order to keep the window from canting but have no idea how thats done.

I'm likely overthinking this and just need to go back tomorrow and try again. Frustrating but fun.

Window binding

Oliver:
I think what Dave was referring to was an adjusting nut (bolt?) at the bottom of the window where the regulator joins it. I can't picture it exactly in my mind, but if you take the door panel off, roll the window down and look at the metal track the window sets in, you will see that it can be loosened and adjusted to run more parallel with the frame.

Oliver:

Now that it's not past my bed time, I pulled out my Bentley repair manual. There are two bolts (midway up the door) involved in adjusting the regulator front/rear parallelism. I loosened both bolts and adjusted the one on the right (nearer the latch) up or down to change how the window sits in the channels.

In your 73 it may be entirely different - I'm not even sure the channels themselves in my doors are removable, for example.
