weird sound at idle

I combed the desert and I can't can't find anything.
I have SSI's and Ben's loud muffler and Steve's chip installed, all in the last two weeks or so. Idle is set pretty good. Everything works great. New o2 sensor.
At Idle I hear a low frequecy thud sound that I believe is random. At the same time, I get a blip on the oil pressure gauge. Happens every two or three seconds. It did the same thing before the chip change. Is it supose to sound like that?.
I checked for exhaust leaks, all good
thanks for the help

it's amazing what can be accomplished when your other wife comes home. She put her hand over one of the muffler tips, sound goes away. I think I just turned into "that guy" as I'm replying to my own threads.
move along, nothing going on at my house, cept beer

So, what's your diagnosis? A little back-pressure building up in the muffler?

BTW, you have an "other" wife? Does the first one know?

don't really have a diagnosis, don't know about sound or pressure waves either. I just thought it might have something to do with the engine. Being paranoid and what not I guess
back pressure building, or not building in a muffler causes this kind of thing? Not trying to be a smart ass or anything, just learning

jbrinkley,

I had the same sound on my Boxster with a GHL. The random noise ended up being a broken weld inside the muffler.

I have Ben's 2 in 1 out muffler with SSi's and SW chip on my '86 3.2L. Mine does not make the sound you are describing. If the sound goes away when you hold onto the tip, it could be a broken weld.

I would seriously doubt a broken weld but I would be happy to look at it for you. Maybe you have a broken exhaust stud??? DO you see any black leakeage anywhere?? The reason I say it is unlickly for a broken weld is there is not much in there to break and if it did you would really know. Sometimes there some left over bbs from cutting the inlets out that are left in the can of the muffler but they blow out very quickly after start up. Give us some more info. Where exactly is it coming from?? Is it possible an exhaust valve is staying open so you hear a poping?? Please advise

Ben, your muffler is top notch and I wasn't implying any negatisim towards your product. Just sharing my personal experience with a GHL I use to own.

Like I said in the email, i doubt any weld broke. There can't be much in there, and I'm not taking it off. I just wanted to ask because noh20 asked. I think the mufflers fine. I think the car is fine. BUT I'm gonna check the valves tomorrow, again, and make sure everythings right. I'm just turning into a serious worry wart. Another muffler of yours is down the street, so I'm going to compare more when he gets home
I would have never posted the question except for the oil pressure blip, its kind of weird
