Cleaning My Gearbox
I have a 1974 Mag case 915 gearbox with a fresh rebuild but a tired look that I will be installing in my RSR clone. I plan to show the car in Hershey before I begin to track it..
Any ideas on what I can do that will not hurt the grearbox but will freshen up the look? You can see from the photo that I tried a scotchright wheel on a small part of the case. I could do the whole case with scotchbright using both a drill and a dremel. I know that I could have had the gearbox case tumbled as part of the rebiuld, but I chose not to. Any ideas??? |

For removal of grease, nothing beats EZ-OFF. I usually clean with a power washer first, then use the EZ-OFF. Clean and repeat as necessary.
Use all precautions: Gloves, Safety glasses, clothes you are willing to throw away.

The case has been degreased. I am talking about removing the baked on crud and surface corrosion.

Old screwdrivers for crud. After that, prime and paint if you want it shiny.

Use the "Original Formula" EZ-Off, not the new stuff, the original works better to get the metal shiny again. You'll need to do it several times to get the crud off (not just grease), then the metal will shine up, as least mine did!
