Hand Throttle for an '83 SC

Since the subject had come up on another thread (and I didn't wish to highjack it, as most of you know my feelings about highjacked threads), I do have a question for the more intrepid of you:

Can one add a hand throttle like I had on my 1974 911 to my 1983 911SC?

If I were to get the hand throttle cables and hand lever from a wrecked '74 and run it through the passenger compartment to the throttle cable, wouldn't this work? There are some occassions when a hand throttle would be a benefit.

What do you guys think?

I don't see why it wouldn't work. You might have to eliminate your AAR, AAV and/or WUR, which is maybe what you are trying to accomplish anyway!

Someone did this to an SC or Carrera in the Northern NJ PCA. The driver's legs were paralyzed, but he did great autocrossing the car using hand controls!

Andras,

I was assuming you were going to use the hand throttle for idle speed adjustment during warmup, not as a replacement for the accelerator pedal (say as for Clay Regazzoni or Alex Zanardi).

Hi Paul, yes exactly.

But did you glean the import of that indominatable man (or woman) in NNJ?

This is the rabid nature of our addiction of all things Porsche!!!!

Also, have you noticed that there are some "procedures" that are best carried out at 3,000 or 5,000 RPM? With a hand throttle you wouldn't need an assistant to hold that engine speed.

i did one recently on a '85 with webers. you should locate a complete early e/brake handle assembly to use for the parts. the thru-bolt is different too. there is a plastic slider piece at the bottom of the throttle lever that slides on the throttle rod inside the tunnel, and also an aluminum knob that set-screws to the throttle rod which the slider pushes.

Andras,

The only parts besides the hand brake assembly with hand throttle lever are ...

#19 in the first diagram ...

and #21 and #22 in the second diagram!

The parts that Warren pointed out should probably just be ordered new. Part 19 in the first diagram is plastic and wears out just like the shifter bushings. Same material.

The handbrake you can pick up used of course.

Thanks guys!

I should have thought to go to the '74 PET. When I had the '74 911 I did most of my own work then too, but my local dealer (Heishman in Arlington VA) was so good to us in the PCA, that I didn't need my own resources - just used theirs.
