matching up engine numbers

How do you tell if the engine is original to the car? Are there numbers on the engine that are in the VIN number?

Thanks. Ron.G

The "red book" by paternie lists the engine number ranges that go with each model and year. For example, an early 911 might have a VIN like 300000 and engine 950000- but there's no relationship between the two.

The only way to really tell is to order the Kardex from PCNA, which is now over $100 for that piece of paper. It (should) list the engine number.

100 bucks!! They really get ya don't they. I'll think I'll use that for something more tangible like a bottle of Vodka and a bag of ice

Thanks for the info.

Why don't you post what numbers you have here and be deluged with helpful replies?

$100 for a bottle of vodka. . . all I can say is, what time are drinks?

When I did this for my car, I noted that my car ( chassis) was a February build...rather early in the "model year" and it was at "X" % of the total production run ( sequential serial number) that year.

When I did the same thing for my engine number...it came out at the roughly-equivalent % of the total engine production run for that year.

Of course it also helped to have all the OEM documentation and under-trunk lid build sheet that confirmed that too...bit I thought it was telling that both the engine and chassis ran about equal.

In absence of Cardex...that may give you some indication....
