Trans refill -- Is this normal?
Switching over to the Smurf oil and just wondering about this.
Is this a normal amount/type of metallic shavings ? It's maybe 10K since last drain. todd 86 coupe ![]() |

I don't know about "normal", but I usually see more of a silvery paste than any identifiable metallic shavings...

Last weekend when I changed out the swepco in my 915, it had a silver paste as well - about 15k miles worth.

Silver (or white) paste is an indication that water and oil have mixted. The water is usually condensation. It is normal.
Metal shavings of this magnitude means that you've (or the PO has) been "grinding the gears". Not serious, but do make sure your clutch is ALL the way in before shifting into the next gear.

If you are really worried, Dow Corning Molykote M Gear oil additive is supposed to "heal" metal surfaces.

Those all look a lot better than what I pulled out of my trans last month. No hint of problem while driving.... yet, shifts fine.

normal - also the actual shavings are much smaller than the Xmas trre effect you are seeing in the photo -- they are stuck together
- pull some off with tweezers, mix in a solvent and view under a lens - then you'll see the real size is much smaller.

It was definitely, as someone put it, the 'christmas tree' effect on the magnet. . . .
On another note, the Swepco seems to have caused a small but noticeably smoother operation. todd 86 coupe |
