trunk paint duplication help
I have areas around the smugglers box and in front of the tire area where the original paint/undercoat material is flacking.Is there a manufacturer or info web site for sales of suitable products?.There is no rust,as I have steel wooled it to bare metal and I don`t want to just paint it with out finding out if there is a product out there that gives the same textured look. Thanks. Tom

I just had a similar question. Not knowing what year car you have, I can only go by what mine has. My 68 had the entire trunk coated with stone guard which is an underbody coating material from Wurth.The Wurth stoneguard can be painted after it's completely dry.Wurth stoneguard is sprayed on with a special sprayer available from the distributor of the coating. http://www.wurthusa.com/en/catalog/product.php?path=06.0510.jpg

Around 1970 the factory started using a Valvoline undercoating product [European market only] called Tectyl, per Paul Frere.
Wurth may have a suitable spray can product, but it won't be the same texture as the factory-applied Tectyl, nor as durable ... since the factory-applied undercoating is baked-on under the paint! I found several pages on Google about Valvoline Tectyl a while back, but I don't believe it is available in the USA.

It is intended for a 67,so I will experiment with Wurth first.Thank you both very much for your help! The 67 does have some texture to it although it differs in color from the 71 T. TFM

We have discussed this recently. trunk coating For your '67, I definitely do NOT think it's an undercoat like Wurth. According to Dr. Johnson's book, the early SWB cars had a "sandpaper" like coating on the bottom surface of the hood. There's no mention of this coating on the floor of the trunk, smugglers lid, etc. We KNOW for certain that the LWB cars had a rubberized coating down near the battery boxes and gas tank support. Can any SWB guru shed light here? Grady, what does your '66 have in the trunk? My thinking is it's regular semigloss paint, and that what looks like a texture is actually years of glue and rust?
