Pro paint touch-ups
Instead of getting the whole car stripped and resprayed, has anyone just had suspect areas sprayed with good results to their car and their wallet???
Pics?

Find a friend who is a pro. My -84 targa was just stripped and painted by a good buddy who does paint/body for living. My total project cost including new trim and glass reinstall was $4k. The project took about 6 months though. Normal cost for the same job would be ~$8k.
I wish the friggin photo upload would work... jt |

go to macco they will do it reasoably I got a quote from them and they were cheap just tell them you want a good job and will pay alittle more for quality work. Matching the paint isn't easy. I did it with my white car but I don't thnk I could do it with other colors.

Unfortunately I don't have any friends that paint. Most do music or design for a living.
I wish I took shop in HS! ![]() Anyone else have suggestions? I'm sure all of us have one ugly scratch on their cars that needs a makeover.

It is not going to be perfect, if you have an area painted, vs. doing the whole car. However, if you have a good body man and if he does entire panels at a time and then even blends it into the adjacient panels, it can be very close to perfect. It is important that the painter does some last minute blending, where he can manipulate the color to be as close as possible to your existing paint. The paint you get just giving the store your code will not be close enough.
I had my decklid repainted. No blending into adjacent panels. It came out great for a daily driver. I wouldnt' want to take it to concours, but it prefers the road course anyway. ![]() George ![]() |

Hey Roman!
I just had my 911 "touched-up" like what you're talking about. Passenger side door, rear quarter, rocker panel and front apron and bumper media blasted and painted. ![]() ![]() It's metallic silver paint which is notorious for not matching well on a repaint. The painter did a fantastic job of matching it and blending it with the existing paint and then clear coating it. Total cost: $840 with tax and I did all the disassembly and reassembly. I think it looks perfect and nobody would think there was any work done... the way a pro shop's work should be. |

Check with a high-line used car dealer. They usually have someone they trust to repaint bumpers and spot areas. Some of these guys are incredible and perform miracles in a parking lot! If the area is small(one panel), I would guess it would cost less than $200.

One thing I forgot to mention and nobody else has adressed:
Even if your partial paint is perfect the day you get it from the shop, it is more than likely that the new paint ages / faints differently than the old paint. This can lead to some serious mismatch later in life. We are talking in a decade timeframe. Just wanted to mention it. This is likely *the* biggest problem with partial resprays. George |

I forgot to mention that the $840 included a visit from the mobile Dent Wizard who removed several dents and the ones that couldn't be pulled were filled and primed. There was significant damage to the passenger door. Around here Dent Wizard charges about $100 per dent if you leave the car at their shop.

Here is my take: some real good painters (shops) will probably balk at doing a 'touch-up' or one panel. You can, however, stop in to a good shop and show them the areas in question and see what their comments are. The truth is, some 'areas' are easier to work with than others, as well a different colors, so you may luck out. I would be up front about the financial situation and maybe one of the painters in the shop does small jobs on the side and could help you out. If nothing else, you may get a recomendation to someone, or learn something. Either one you would be ahead.
Good luck -

DarrylD- Your car looks clean. I think I'm going to scout out some paint shops out of my area (SF, high rent= higher costs) maybe out in the east bay or up north near napa. Anyone have any recommends?
