Question Balljoints scraping weights off wheel--solution?

I noticed last fall before I put the 911 away for the winter that the right front wheel was juddering at higher speeds. Finally got around to investigating, and it appears that the cotter pin and lock plate hardware underneath the ball joint at the bottom of each front strut are getting too close to the wheel. They ripped off the stick-on weights on the right front wheel and had machined away much of the weights on the left front.

What can I do about this? Can I safely file down the lock plate? Or should I just take the car to the wheel balancer and tell them to put the weights closer to the face so they don't interfere?

I don't think you want to loose the keepers to the lock plate, although I have one BJ where they are missing and I safety wired it. I will be replacing it soon. I would say move the weights. One inch difference on the weights shouldn't make much difference to the dynamic balance.

I don't even think I personally would take the wheels in to the tire shop. I would move the weights myself and try it.

take the tires to a reputable shop and show them where ther are rubbing(leave the weights on, it looks like they are using the style that is thicker in the center not good, standard weigths would work with out rubbing, Kevin

I agree with Milt. Just move the weights toward the center of the wheel just enough to clear the ball joints.

When I raised my spindles, I just removed the weights altogether, and no wheel imbalance. (They were small anyway) So I doubt you'll have any ill side effects from moving them.

Will do. I took a drift and gently nudged the tabs up a bit for a mm or so more clearance in the meantime. Now it just clears the weights.
