Another stupid CV joint question...
I know I am asking lots of questions, but you know I am having a blast restoring my old Porsche. I have fooled with cars for 30 years, on and off, but this is all new. Porsches really are completley different animals.
Anyway, I stripped the very first CV joint bolt I tried to put 60 foot lbs on, and now, much to my chagrin, I have found that I have been using an SAE torx drive on these bolts. Dah....... So, I replaced the stripped bolt and now I need to: a) find out what (metric) size they are (12 point torx, 10 mm bolts) and b) where can I find a drive to put them on. Thanks!

I'm like you (old VW guy,8 Microbusses) The tool is the same tool as the VW's used, which is basically a 7mm (i think7) six point Allen with 12 points instead. The tol can be bought from our hosts, or a local place. I'll go out to the garage later; I think mine is a K-D, maybe it has a number FYI. Curiously enough, I just pulled mine out today. My 78 SC has regular Allen head capscrews, like an old VW had...didn't have the 12 points, nor did it have the little moon retainers that interlock two capscrews together. The CV's have a date stamp on them of 3/77, so my guess is that they're original. I'm puzzled by this. Whatever you do, don't strip one. They're murder to get out. The best way to get a stripped one out is to drill the head off, and put in a new one. Pat

Looks like it is Pelican CV-T1. Is that for 8mm and 10 mm. It must be...........

This is what is in my 78SC. In the following picture, from left to right, is my 20 year old K-D # 2304 tool, which was used for the later model VW bus (probably Beetles also) CV joint. In the center is a Craftsman 6 mm Allen, which is what I used to remove the capscrews from the CV joints on my SC (six per joint, 24 total). On the right is one of my capscrews, which bears the inscription P S W 1 2 9 on the top of the cap. The screw is an 8 mm diameter shank, the head is very close to 12.9 mm diameter, and the overall length minus the cap is approximately 49 mm. My joints are the 100 mm joints. The capscrews are definitely CV joint rated; the heads are hard as a rock. Now, I was wondering about this the other day. I don’t think this is what was supposed to be in there according to my research, but the joints are stamped 3/77, which if I recall correctly, is a date stamp the OEM put on them. So, I’m confused. If this is the original equipment, it’s worked for 240,000 km just fine. If I order new joints, what will I get? So, based on this information, don’t take any advice from me regarding CV joints, as my setup may be an odd configuration. I don’t know, as I have nothing to compare it to. Interesting, Pat, I have already thrown my old joint out, but I wil examine the CV on the other side to see if it bears a similar date stamp. I think I will buy the pelican parts tool to do this and the othe CV joint............

I removed my axles a few weeks ago. I found a twelve point at Pep Boys, believe it or not. One bolt was stripped by my attempts with other tools it seems. I used a dremel to cut a slot in the head, then turned a large screwdriver perpendicular to the bolt I was able to turn it out. Last resort of course but it worked for me and if it shears you can still drill the head off.

Similar to what I did. I took a body grinder and ground a slit in the head of the bolt, parallel to the longitudinal aspect of the bolt, then used an air chisel to bang it off.

Guys,
Even though it is necessary to have the proper 12-point 'Polygon' drive bit on hand for removal of those old bolts ... you don't have to replace the bolts with the same kind! Any normal DIN 912, property class 12.9 Allen bolt will work, and many cars [including mine] came with them from the factory! I have been getting my metric Allen bolts and Schnorr washers from Metric & Multistandard Supply for over 26 years ... http://www.metricmcc.com/
