Does it look too low ???

I know its not a way to tell just by looking, but you have to measure to check, but does it look too low ? I get some rubbing at the front (7x16 with 205s) no problems back with 9x16 and 245shttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1110833148.jpg

Looks nice. As long as the rubbing and driveways are okay, I say you can't be too low. Maybe you can increase front camber to reduce rubbing?

Glasgow 911SC 03-14-2005 11:51 AM

As far as looks go, that's  I get rubbing at the front inside. Maybe you should think about fitting a plate similar to Mikes (89911).

I am considering dialing more negative camber up front, but was told that I would lose some high speed stability. Car becomes nervous (so they say). Is that true ?
I will also roll the fender lips.
If I increase negative camber I will get more oversteer, right? Car was very nervous and oversteered alot on a track day yesterday. Will that make things worse ?

stv951 03-14-2005 11:55 AM

sorry Chris? What is that plate ?

Glasgow 911SC 03-14-2005 12:03 PM

That's the area my front tyre rubs at. My car is quite low at the front too. Mike fitted a small, sheet metal plate there to stop paint damage at full lock.

kqw 03-14-2005 12:08 PM

I am assuming that you are rubbing at the front fender lip?

Have you rolled the fenders?

stv951 03-14-2005 12:11 PM

Yes they rub on the lips. Not rolled them yet. It also rubs inside when the steering turns (to make a U-turn etc.)

john70t 03-14-2005 12:32 PM

The first question I ask when hearing the "rubbing" issue is why not start with ride-height and/or better yet new front shocks?
Mabye hit the apex a little less perpendicular, or become a better driver?

It seems kinda funny to take an OEM car and glue/weld on flares, complete repaint, etc, etc, when the cause of the symtom isn't established.

kqw 03-14-2005 12:43 PM

You mentioned measuring...What are your measurement front/back. Are you experiencing any bump steer?

stv951 03-14-2005 12:58 PM

John70t: I had the car lowered for both better handling and aesthetic reasons. Shocks are Biltstein sports in good shape-not new though

kqw: I had the car adjusted to Bruce Andersons specs after lowering it. High speed is important to me as well as fast road/track handling
What would be the best compromise in settings for this combination ?
Steering is quite heavy, but I don't mind. No bump steer

kqw 03-14-2005 01:11 PM

You have a few choices...

As you know, rubbing can be a dangerous hazard expecially at high speeds.

You can adjust your height a few fractions of an inch and add the inner plate as folks suggested or, roll the fenders and add the plate. Either way, it's important to eliminate that lip rubbing.

No bump steer at your current front ride height tells me that your setup was done correctly.

Besides your rubbing problem, your car must handle cornering like it's on rails...

stv951 03-14-2005 01:17 PM

Well its very good at the front, but I was experiencing alot of oversteer on the track - and I mean ALOT. I increased the pressures on the back as I was told by a friend from 40 to 43-44. Things were much better, but not perfect. Is that pressure too high ??? My car has 9x16 on 245s rear

adomakin 03-14-2005 01:30 PM

looks great to me!

if you can live with the height then go for it

Andy

What are your front pressures they might be relative to the over steer issue

Michael

jyl 03-14-2005 02:09 PM

That seems like pretty high rear tire pressures, if those are the "when cold" numbers. Add 3-4 psi when hot and you are running at 46-48psi!

If you are really interested in your tire pressures, take a look at the SmartTire tire pressure monitoring system sold by Tire Rack. I have it and find it interesting to monitor my pressures as I drive.

I've always thought front tire pressures should be roughly 3-4psi lower than the rears, as a starting point anyway. Would be interested to hear what others think/do.

What alignment specs did you use?

stv951 03-14-2005 09:04 PM

I'll check Smart tire pressure system. Is it accurate ?
I started with 36 fr and 40 rear when the tires were cold. Car oversteered and I almost spun in 3 or 4 occasions. Came back and added +3 psi on th rear wheels. Didn't touch the fronts, as they felt they were "glued" to the ground. I saw an improvement (6 seconds faster per lap ! so bad it was before) But still I thought it was too much pressure.
Can't recall the alignment figures as it was done some time ago.

Compared to stock, the 7's add some track to the front but not additional tire width. The 9's in the rear add lots of track and additional tire. I'm surprised you're getting oversteer at all.

Pressures seem high as well. I don't have any recommendations for street tire pressures but there are some in the archives. Think about the other cars that run a 245/16. Vette's, older M5's, those are heavy cars and may need 40 pounds but not a 911.

This is apples and oranges but with Yoko A032's I run 19 in the front and 23 in the rear on a fairly lightweight RS clone with a 3.2. Hot temps are in the mid to high 20's.

creaturecat 03-15-2005 04:59 AM

standard practise - roll the fenders

stv951 03-15-2005 07:03 AM

Are there any issues when rolling the fenders ? Could there be damage on the wing ? Rust issues ?

Tod:
Saw your car. Looks great ! Did I read correctly ? 19 fr and 23 rear ? So low ? Aren't the tires underinflated ?
It was my first time on the track with this 911. I tried something more than street pressures. Car was very VERY nervous on lift off.

Whats your idea on fast road/track tires ? Yokos are good ?
Do they work on the street ? A friend of mine just put Toyos RA1s on his... 750 BHP 996 TT. He is very happy with these. I know, its a completely different car, but... Anyone tried them ?
