Can I put 225-50s on 16x9 inch Fuchs?

I already have the tires (still unmounted) and I've noticed that 245-45-16s are unavailable in this tire so I can't just buy two more for the rear. I'm wondering if it would be unsafe to run 225-50-16s in the rear with 9" Fuchs. TIA.

I am running 245-50-16s on my rear and love the fat tire... they are Yokohama AVS ES100s...

This doesnt answer your direct question...but maybe you can look to switch brands for the rears.

225s wont fit...right? I run those on my fronts and the Fuch is much more narrow.

These are Goodyear F1 DS-G3s BTW. They do make a 245-50 but they are also 3/4" taller. Not sure if that is less desireable or not.

Tony,

It is absolutely fine to run 225/50/16 on a 9. Especially for your SC!

It will give you an awesome look with enough tire to play with!

Thank you,
Jason

225 50 is fine for your car, but I don't think I'd use them on a 9" wheel. The wheel is too big. If you go to most tire manufacturer's websites they'll list several specs for their tires, one of the usual specs is "approved rim width" . For every 225 50 I've ever seen the range is 6"--8".

I don't know how a 225 50 would look on a 9, but I'm betting it'd look a tad small.

I bought some 9x16s once that had 225s on them and they looked WEIRD. The bead had to spread so much to seat that it was wider at the rim than the tread, so the tire had a "tapered" look that I found objectionable. I immediately replaced them with a 265.

It would not be unsafe to use a 225, but you definitely will not get the performance possible with a wider tire. You paid for the wide rims to get better performance, no? Now I think you will have to pay a little more for the tires to realize the gains.

None of this will work, which is why you should just sell me your 9's and be done with it.

Or you can trade/sell your 9"s to someone who has 8"s - like me . . .

If you decide not to make my day :-) I'd buy the wider tires and maybe lower the rear a tad if the tires are taller. Shame to have 9"s and not take advantage of them.

Yes, but one of the problems with stock SC's is the tire/wheel setup. 7 inches is not really wide enough for 225 tires. Similarly, 6 inches is not really wide enough for 205's . Yes, you can mount them but now, you're not going to get maximum performance. With the tread wider than the rim, the tire is allowed to flex sideways in hard cornering, making the car feel squirrely. Those same stock tires (205 and 225) are best off on 7" and either 8" or 9" A 265 should probably have a wheel wider than 9". Again, for maximum performance. I heard about this problem, and it matches my personal experience. In fact, since I cannot currently afford new wheels, I use the Bridgeston S03 tire. its sidewall is MUCH stiffer than my earlier Michelins, and it handles MUCH less squirrely.

I'd be all for a 205 55 and 225 50 on 7 and 8, but I wouldn't run a 225 50 on 9's. I think that's just too darn small.

It depends on the tire design, I think. I run 245s on 8" rims in front and 265s on 9s in the rear with Kumho V700 tires and haven't found them to be "squirrely" at all. The recommended rim width range for the 265 is 8-10", so 9 is right in the middle and is actually what the factory uses for "measured rim width" in their specs. I have even run 275 Hoosier R3S03s on 9" rims and not felt any sidewall mushiness or squirm in the rear end.

YMMV,
TT

There is a range, and there is an ideal.

Stick with the ideal if you have a choice; it will result in a better overall 'performance'.

I just removed a set of 225/40s off of 9" rims and replaced them with 255/35s. Exact same sidewall height.
A 9" wheel is 10" wide. A 255mm tire is also 10" wide. A 225mm tire is only 8.9" wide.
The 225s looked damned goofy on the 9" rims. The rim was the widest part of the combo, and more importantly, was all scuffed up from hitting things that normally would not mar the rubber tire.
