Can I get a new door jamb VIN sticker?

I'm looking to buy a '79 930. The car has been repainted black from light blue metallic. There is no door jamb sticker or windshield plate but the VIN # is in the trunk. I can see it being a hassle not having an easily accessable VIN, so is there anyway to get this sticker from Porsche?

By the way the car has been set up primarily as a track car. The suspension has been upgraded. It has 3.4l pistons, B&B exhaust and intercooler, K27 turbo, fuel enrichment, 1 bar spring, and, front spoiler mounted oil cooler. As for cosmetics, it has C2 fiberglass fenders and 17" turbo twist wheels. The owner says he has the dyno sheet showing over 400 hp at the rear wheels. The owner sounds honest. It sounds like he went crazy with the car when times were good and now he's just tired of dealing with what has become almost a race car. I also get the impression the car is more than he really wanted to or could handle on a track.

I looked over the car pretty carefully and couldn't find any wreck damage. We're still negotiating price but we're in the low $20K range mainly due to the repaint and some oil leakage on the engine. If I decide to buy, I'll take the car over to another shop for a PPI.

I've heard that you could but my local dealer wasn't able to do it. I need to try again. Let me know what you find out.

Like Chris I have heard you can do this through a dealer. Check one and if you run into a wall, check another. Please post the results so others will know in the future.

You can get the VIN plate and the certification label with VIN no.
Porsche has a form D1 13 you need to fill out and sign, also you will need to provide your proof of ownership. The cost is about $45 for the plate and $50 for the certification label. It takes about 4-5 weeks to get them

What is the "certification label", do I need this or can I just get the plate?

The certification label is the black sticker with the S/N (perferated holes so body color shows through the S/N) on the B pillar below the door latch. The VIN plate is on the A pillar behind the windshield. If you want to order the S/N sticker below the door latch then you need to order what Porsche call the certification label.

Thanks for the help. I'm surprised nobody has commented on the car. I've pretty much talked myself into it. The owner says he won't take less than $23K, I was hoping for $21K, but what's a couple thousand dollars between friends

Hey 125shifter, did you order this yet? I have been needing a new sticker, sorry, Certification Label, as well.
My car was resprayed by a PO and the label must have been removed.

I'm going through this very thing right now. I have found in my research and in my own experience that the majority of Porsche dealerships will initially not be of much help because they have never done this and aren't aware that it can be done. Here's the process:

1. You bring your proof of ownership (title document, registration, etc.) to the dealer and they make a photocopy.

2. The photocopy is faxed to PCNA.

3. PCNA verifies your ownership and then faxes the order form to the dealership.

4. You have to sign the order form, which is then faxed back to PCNA.

5. PCNA sends the order to Porsche AG, who manufactures a new VIN sticker and ships it back to PCNA, who ships it on to your dealer.

6. The whole thing takes a couple months. The price at my dealer is $82.

Now, if your dealer tells you they can't do it or they wouldn't know how, tell them to contact their PCNA representative. Every dealer has one and they deal with them all the time. The PCNA rep will know the procedure or be able to find out easily.

With no "A" post (windshield) VIN plate, could it be gray-market? Check the VIN to make sure. ROW cars did not have either windshield or door jam VIN plates.

Thinking further, could this be a stolen-recovered car? If so, most states have another "re-assigned" in sticker or plate somewhere.

With two of the VINs missing, I would be very careful. Inspect the aluminum VIN for the correct rivets and any sign of tampering. Take a little mirror on a telescoping wand and a flashlight and inspect the BACKSIDE of the chassis stamped VIN for any sign of tampering.

A little caution now goes a long ways.

I'm surprised that PCNA and Porsche AG even do this. (not that I doubt they do, just surprised.) The reason I'm surprised is that AFAIK, the reason for multiple instances of VIN stickers/tags is so that you can tell if the car has been wrecked and been put back together from panels from a number of other cars.

So could a dishonest person actually weld a car together and then slap on some new vin tags to make it look like an origianl car?

I would think this is (or shortly will be) less of an issue when buying used cars. The acceptance of CarFax by the public and businesses as almost official documentation of a car's history would eliminate the dishonest people from trying to forge a car.

CarFax only starts when the 17 figure VIN was introduced. 1979 cars have a shorter number.

I'm sure it's possible, though it would take quite a bit of effort. You'd have to replace not only the VIN sticker and the VIN plate as well, but also all the parts that have the VIN stamped on them and the other informational stickers. You could probably fool an idiot, but not a savvy buyer.

Building cars out of "pieces" has been done for years..and will probably continue. Only the massive technology changes of current cars..(VIN coded computers etc) will maybe reduce it.

There are also "non-public" VIN's on most vehicles (including Porsche) in locations used for law enforcement, ie; Auto theft divisions, that are not widely known.
