Targa top rebuild/reskin
Search First Flame Shields Up!! I've done a BBS search, but couldn't find good info on this. Of course, my SQL might suck.
My Targa top needs to be reskinned and seals replaced. I need recommendations on a shop to do the work. I live in California, SF Bay Area. The car is a driver, so I don't need concours quality, but I expect work I pay for to be better than anything I could do - and I'm pretty anal. And air/water leaks would be unacceptable. Where do I take it? What should I expect to pay? Any rules about 'you should always do this when redoing your Targa top'? Thanks everyone.

Can't remember names off the top of my head but check the adds in the back of Excellence...there are at least a couple of good shops that specialize in Targa top recovering.

Doug--
I had my '85 top redone locally at Palo Alto Upholstery in December. Very good to deal with, fast turnaround. They might even have a loaner while they redo yours (given the weather lately I don't think you want to chance driving home without a top!). I only had mine reskinned - the existing seals were fine. If I had a chance to do it all over again, I would buy the re-skin kit and do it myself. I too expected work far better than I could have done. While Dan Petchel did an "ok" job on mine, I was not overly impressed for the large sum of money it cost. When I originally talked to him, I wanted to strip my top myself, powder coat all the metal parts and ship it to him to assemble and recover. He said don't worry about it because he paints them and to just ship it. Well, the rain gutters had large scratches and the paint job was just black sprayed over the original with no prep work at all. I would read up on the topic and try it yourself if you have average skills.

Try reskinning the top yourself. It's only about $150.00 in material and a six pack of beer and a nice hot sunny day.
Here's a link to w website that I used when I reskin my top. http://www.vintagebus.com/targa/index.html and here's a picture of my FIRST reskinned top. Link to the post for my reskin targa top stretch!! It's not brain surgery or rocket science! Last edited by ruf-porsche; 03-21-2005 at 06:28 PM.. |

My is with Dan at Carsinc right now, he has been a jewell to deal with thus far. I should have the top back this week I'll let you know how he does. A recover with headliner runs $595 including return shipping, mine is a little more, seeing as it was repaired previously from a blow off and had been run over too! Dan's doing major surgery, I can't wait to have my "new" top back.

Dave Brown in Boulder Colorado has an excellent rep as a Targa top refinisher. I'm taking mine up to him as soon as it stops snowing.

I don't remember the owner's name right off hand, but we just had a tech session at Jeda Generations in San Jose and I was REALLY impressed with the owner. Old school work ethic, and he has done enough Targa tops to know what works and what doesn't. I don't believe that he will be the cheapest, but the prices he discussed were very reasonable and you get what you pay for. I would definitely have them do my top if it needed it.
No affiliation, etc. etc., just impressed with the man and his operation. And all of the club members who have had work done there rave about it. Tom

Targa repair
Dan at carsinc has an exchange program now. He has all possible models in stock and will ship out to you before you ship yours to him. You can even use his shipping box to return yours. Believe me, he does several tops a week and knows exactly what he is doing. If you really want a concour rebuilt, tell him. He will put in any new parts you want but new is expensive, nice used is reasonable.
