1970 911T 'project' car questions. Just got her.

I got my 1970 911 T today, and she runs. A little rough, a little sluggish to start, but she does start. I bought it fully knowing it was a 'project' car, and here are a few 'projects' that will be needed up front.

1. The throttle pedal. Looks like someone tried to glue the base to the floorboard. It wobbles side to side, and the rod with the ball joint that connects to the back of the pedal falls out easily. What's a good way to remedy these issues? (I'm thinking duct tape for the connecting rod as a temporary fix)

2. The shifter is very loose, wobbles a lot, but it will go into gear and stay in gear. I'm thinking it's bushings or something on the shifter itself. Educate me on this and what I'd need to check/replace to get it solid again.

That's the two main ones I have found so far. There are a couple more minor things that will go on the list (which will surely expand!)

Congratulations – a fun project. Coupe or Targa? How about some pictures.

#0 Change oil and inspect the sump and have someone cut open the old filter. Inspect the transmission magnet.

#1 Buy a new throttle pedal, available from our host.. A common problem with the hinge.

#2 Most likely worn at the shift handle assembly. Start there. Do a search, I posted on this just a few weeks ago.

What are the other perceived issues?
How well does the clutch operate?
When you say it runs a little rough, describe the symptoms.
When you say it is “sluggish to start,” describe the conditions and symptoms.

When I get back from my barber, I’ll post more. Give us more info and some direction of where you are going with the project.

Best,
Grady

Hi Matt, good to hear your car arrived. We will take care of those issues on Friday. I agree with Grady. You will likely need a new gas pedal. I think I have a spare you can use until a new one comes in. Get the early gas pedal not the later one. Even though it may be cheaper. The later gas pedal has a slightly different mounting and the angle will be funny to your foot.

I would probably say you will need to replace all the bushings in the shift linkage. This will include the ball cup and shift rod bushing as well as the shift coupler bushings. total is about $30 and available from our host.

I suspect your problems are carb related. I think I remember seeing the car still had Zeniths. This is just a matter of removing the carbs and cleaning all the passage ways and jets. It will only take a few hours.

As Grady says you should change all the fluids. I would probably strain everything that comes out of the case to look for signs of engine damage.

You may also want to check the cap, rotor, plug wires and points to make sure they are in good condition. A good tune-up now is worth it.

I can't wait to see it.

I'll get pictures soon! It definitely IS a project car. She needs some TLC, but should run and handle good.

Jamie, I'll see about rigging the pedal for now... I think some duct tape will work fine. I'm going to check out the parts section and find the shifter stuff and throttle pedal. Hopefully I may have them by this weekend.

OK... here's what I got:

Accelerator Pedal, 911 (1965-75), 914 All

Shifter Bushing Kit, 912/911 (1969-86), 911 Turbo (1976-88)

Ordering now. That should take care of the accelerator and shift issues, I hope.

Jimmy-rigging of the gas pedal is done. Got some duct tape around it to hold the rod in. The base is still loose, and it still kinda flops around. It was also sticking, but it looks like the other end of the rod, the little metal lever it connected to, was hitting part of the floorboard or something, so I bent it a little so it doesn't anymore.
