Interior project b4/during/after

Finally wrapping up new interior in my '79 SC. The RS carpet and door panels are kind of bland looking but it looks 100% better than what I started with.

Details:
New: "Original Fit" Black plush RS carpet
-RS door panels
-Alpine stereo
-Infinity door speakers
-window seals
-door seals
-headliner
-sunroof cable
-Prototipo
Work done: Wire brush/POR 15/Paint- window seal areas & door Jams, Paint sunroof areas, Paint trunk, repair cobbed sunroof mechanism, pull old stereo wiring and replace w/new, clean floor & paint black, remove pillar trim & replace w/ new, remove window tint and repair defrost wiring. Strip & repaint all window trim. Much more that Iprobably forgot!

The rear quarter window seals were the toughest thing done.

Tim,
I would say more like 200%. Did you dye your old parts black or buy new/used?

Knee pads, ashtray face and top door trim pcs got the old vinyl die treatment, the door pillars and rear trim pcs got recovered in new vinyl matching the new RS door panels.

Looks great. Was your car formerly tan and repainted white?

Yeah it was butterscotch originally. The guy I bought it cheap from had it painted GP White a few years back. The underside of the trunk hood, engine hood and door jams had been painted white also. When I had the engine out, I re-painted the engine bay and now I took care of the trunk and re-did the jams and under the window seals properly. For the first time in my life I actually bought paint that matched from the start.

I found that I could actually blend this paint (the fact that it is white helped alot here). I thought I would eventually repaint the whole car after fixing it up mechanically over a couple years. I found that the previous paint job (single stage) is pretty thick and I now am wet sanding with 1500 and buffing. I need to repaint the rockers due to some dings, but I think when I am finished, I will have a very nice quality finish with no trace of the old Butterscotch to be found anywhere (this seemed impossible to me, but it is slowly happening right before my eyes). This car was cheap, but I obviously have put a ton of labor into it thus far and about 4K in the engine and about 1K on the interior. I enjoy doing this kind of stuff in general and when I am finished, I get the satisfaction of knowing I did it all.

Nice job Tim. Did you replace or dye the dash?

Very cool, Tim. Really looks great. Especially the headliner - with a sunroof, no less! That is pro quality work. Of course, you are a pro! I think the ever popular appbiz has sun visors....

The dash top supposedly had been replaced by the PO (which I believe, because it was improperly attached, just like everything else the PO did or had done). You should have seen the rear quarter glass seals, the front portions were not installed in the internal groove (no wonder the doors did not close properly).

I have been completely shocked by some of the "previous repairs" I have found on this car. It is slowly coming around though and I must admit it has been a fun project o'all.

The headliner was fairly easy (although time consuming). The real sumb1tches were the quarter window trim/seals, the quarter RS carpet pcs and the defrost wiring.

How did the factory deal with window trim and headliner installation? I cannot imagine a worker spending as much time as I did installing this stuff.

Wow, I believe you may be the first Pelican to ever say those words. How much time did it consume exactly? You live pretty close to MI, care to do another?

BTW… excellent job, it looks great!

Beautiful !!!
Glad to hear you say the headliner wasn't too bad except for the time. Give us some of the things you learned. I'm going to have to do that & haven't done it before. I agree with the stuff you found that the PO had done. Everytime I go into something somebody else has done before, it's always a mess. Enjoy your new ride !

I did not keep track of the time for the headliner itself (probably a day for the headliner portion only of the job, the before and after work took plenty long). My sunroof was all screwed up also and one has to pull the glass and re-install. The actual gluing and trimming of the headliner is really pretty easy though.

I was worried after reading other's posts including Wayne's where he said he would rather overhaul an engine as opposed to installing a headliner. Luckily that was not the case for me (I thought my engine rebuild was a genuine PITA compared to other engines though).

It would be easy to screw-up if one was not careful or tried to rush. (maybe my fabric aircraft covering experience/patience helped?)

I used contact cement and only a few spring clamps to install. After I was done the car sat w/out the windows for 3-4 weeks and nothing sagged or came unglued. When the windows were "roped" in, the headliner did not budge. I don't know, maybe I got lucky?
