Hi - My name is Chris. I've been reading posts on this board for a while, and have finally in jumped feet first & registered as a user. I must say, this site has a wealth of information, and the collective experience you guys have is invaluable. I used to use a similar forum called Roadfly, but it seems that has died a virtual death!
I sold my beloved BMW M6 last summer to finance a remodel, and missed having a 'fun' car dreadfully, so in January of this year I bought a 1984 Carrera 3.2 Convertible. Prior to that I had never been a Porsche fan - but it was love at first drive! Anyway, I've tried all the usual shift improvements mentioned in Wayne's book to help with the 'sloppy' shift. My mechanic assures me that the long throw & characteristic free play are inherent features of the 915 transmission. I am considering a short shift kit, and am debating between the Porsche OEM kit and another made by Weltmeister. Does anyone have any preferences, recommendations pros vs. cons? Oh, and where can I find out about local Porsche-related events in the So Cal area? |

You should use the search feature, because this topic has been discussed in great detail. I had the factory shifter in my '84 and loved it. Just remember that a short shifter does not speed up shifting, it just makes the throw shorter.

The sloppiness can be pretty much eliminated w/ bushings and couplers, try search.

I have a feeling he knows about the "search." I'm on a hunt right now and that's how I found this. But, get the exact info between the Welt and the factory might be a chore.
I'll see as I continue down the list. Then, I'll come back here. Chris, let me offer you a little warmer welcome to the board. ![]() Edit: using the words, "short, shifter" or "short+shifter" just like it shows, brings up some good and recent threads. Last edited by Zeke; 03-29-2005 at 08:07 PM.. |

Sloppiness is a function of worn parts not short shifters, I have and do like the factory s/s kit, not every one does like them. but the best improvemant came from, a bushing and coupler upgrade this is a typical result of search "shift + coupler"

I think that Performance or Automotion still has the factory SS kit. Sorry I don't recall which.
I just bought my car recently, and the shifting was so bad that I could hardly tell 1st from 5th and the reverse lock-out was not even working (not good). I bought all new bushings and a Seine Gate Shift kit from our sponsor, and the difference is beyond belief. I don't have it quite dialed in yet, as I still have to concentrate on the 2 - 3 shift for fear of getting 1st, but I am real close. Long story short, you will never get a 915 to shift like a Honda, as you will read on many of the threads here. But you can make a vast improvement over what you have by spending about $200 on the above upgrades. Do a search on "Seine", and you will have a lot to read. Welcome to the board! Ken
