How to identify engine type/displacement

Is there any way to verify what size/type of engine you have besides the engine ID number stamped on the block? The engine in my car was replaced/rebuilt at some point with new pistons/heads and I'm trying to verify the actual displacement. I believe the engine was upgraded to a 2.4 since it has a 2.4 MFI pump on it. However it appears to have steel barrels on it (they look a little rusty) and I'm told the E and S engines had aluminum barrels. Is there any way to visually verify this? Can the barrels be measured for displacement with the motor in the car?

No.....beyond a build sheet.....or tearing it down.....

Again, no. You can't tell unless you inspect it... the inside.

I purchased a rebuilt short stroke 2.5 engine that purportedly had RS cylinders. Since the seller couldn't verify and no paperwork, I worked out a deal where I would remove the cylinder head to verify that fact. I had cash on the table. If no RS, no buy. If RS, he takes the cash and I go home with the pieces.

As it turned out, it was as he said, but there were other issues and I ended up rebuilding it with added 2.7 pieces and machine work.
