Perma-Tune CDI power gain

I have a Perma-Tune CDI box installed on my '79 3.0 engine. How much more power (if any) is gained with the Perma-Tune rather than an OEM Bosch unit?

Thanks

Thanks JWW. What would be the difference between the Bosch and Permatune CDI box? Just the brand name?

Careful what you ask for. If you're asking Warren about the differences, you'll get more schematic diagrams than you've ever seen in your scariest nighmares. If you're asking for opinions, everyone's got a strong one here. For my money? I'd say Bosch is the most durable, also the most expensive to buy. After that, I was advised by a highly respected poster and longtime 911 guy that Permatune was better than MSD. Others believe differently. Also for my money, either there is a spark and the gasoline burns, or there is a problem. Barring a problem, they all work the same.

(edit) Ron, would you like to tell us again about your "out of this world" permatune experience???

No, the Bosch unit works extremely well.
In fact the two boxes are different internally. JW doesn't need me to confirm what he said about performance gains, but..."nada" is right on.
My car is on the Atkins diet and can't have carbs.

Thanks for the info guys. I have a spare Perma-Tune that I bought off of a fellow Pelican a few months ago. Thankfully I never had to use it after all, and it will act as a spare.

You wont gain any power at all... the only upside I've seen is that it's cheaper than the stock unit, and I havent seen as much wear and arcing on the cap/rotor.

Quite honestly, I would just go to the MSD 6AL. I had THREE Perma-tune units fail in the span of 6 months (all three times, units were replaced by Permatune with rebuilt ones maybe a guy just wasnt paying attention on the line?) before I installed the MSD and havent had a problem since.. If you do go this route you'll need to use either a Bosch blue coil or the MSD Blaster coil as the stock one wont work. You'll also want to gap the plugs slightly larger than stock..

3 perma-tunes in 6 months suggests a problem with your car, not the units.

Logic would suggest so... Since the MSD was installed, havent had any problems....
