What hardware is needed for cat replacement?
Subject is basically the question. Car is a stock 86 3.2
I am replacing my cat due to having failed smog test for excessive emissions across the board and because I have been wondering about it's possibly being clogged. Are the gaskets reusable or do they need replacing? The hardware? If the gaskets need replacing, what do I need? - cat to muff - what's on the input end? I'd like to order whatever is needed before ripping it apart and then having it sit . . . thx todd 86 coupe |

Do yourself a favor and call to speak with Tom. He hooked me up with all the parts: 3 different gaskets and enough bolts and nuts to do the job. Getting it apart is a *****, go to sears and get the damaged nut removal tools - worth every penny!

13 mm wrenches in different configuration is all you need. 3 gaskets of different sizes. A can of whatever your favorite rust penetrant you use. And a bag of fresh nuts and bolts with a tube of antiseize (the next guy will thank you), Oh, the O2 sensor does have to come off, I think it is a standard size wrench.

Yelca is right, if the factor hardware is on there, the 13mm wrenchs in every conceivable configuration is about all you need. Someone replaced a few of my bolts with some rusted on odd hardware between a 13mm and a 1/2". Those sears tools worked wonders.

I had a heck of a time removing the cat off my -84 last year. There are 9 bolts and 3 gaskets. Couple of the bolts came off right away, some needed Kroil+muscle and some needed drilling. I replaced that heavy sumbtch cat with a cat pipe and swear the engine revs quicker. I didn't bother buying new gaskets since high temp rtv gasket maker works perfectly. Ace hw has all nuts/bolts and the rtv.

Got the cat - looks to be a slightly different config, but will see if that is actually the case this weekend
Can you really use RTV on the exhaust? Looked at the stuff at the parts store today and it seems to be made for valve cover gasket use, but not exhaust. 700 deg max. Does the exhaust/cat exceed that? I'm all for using it if it is ok . . . todd 86 coupe |
