Keep it original or modify it?

I have a basic (well with some small mechanical modifications) 1978 sc, and I am thinking of replacing the front and rear with rsr or ruf bumpers. Unfortunately i am in two minds - can not decide if I should keep it as it should be or change it :o( Whilst I do really love the classic sc look, I also like the ruf look. What do you all think????

MotoSook 04-06-2005 08:48 AM

MODIFY IT!

twobone 04-06-2005 08:49 AM

Me too!

I'm stuck with the same emotional struggle

Here is the link from my discussion
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/214208-bumper-swap-what-would-you-do-if-you-were-me.html

Kroggers 04-06-2005 08:51 AM

I have been recommended against it by a 911 body shop who is currently replacing my front wings. They said it will reduce the value of a great car???

Kroggers 04-06-2005 08:56 AM

So twobone, what did you do in the end?? I really like both looks, but am worried about changing the classic look of my car

yelcab1 04-06-2005 08:57 AM

Modify it, a stock SC is worth $10G. A modified SC is worth $10G. If you like it, go for it. Don't worry about its market value, there is not much there.

LakeCleElum 04-06-2005 08:58 AM

Keep it stock...SC's will go up in value as time passes and modifications will hurt the price down the road....

Kroggers 04-06-2005 09:00 AM

I was thinking more - modify the mechanics as much as possible, but keep the look the same - or is this wrong??

twobone 04-06-2005 09:12 AM

I'm thinking of a compromise

I may go for this front splitter and a duck tail

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1112807459.jpg

It's not my car....but schweet!

I think it gives a bit of the RUF profile while still maintaining the bumper. I bet it is easier to go back to stock that way

Kroggers 04-06-2005 09:17 AM

Not sure... I just can not make up my mind, and the car is in the shop whilst we speak!! At the moment I am more on the side of keeping it original (with plans of upgrading to a 2.3 lump)

MikeSid 04-06-2005 09:18 AM

Make modifications that are reversible. Keep original parts.

To a certain extent all modifications are reversible, but be realistic. If you are talking about welding on RSR flares...that's not really an easily reversible mod. Swapping bolt on parts is.

Treat it like a set of legos. Snap and unsnap - just don't break an individual piece to suit a particular mod.

Kroggers 04-06-2005 09:29 AM

Hmmmm, thank you for that MikeSid, I already fitted this updated reflector to get fog lights!!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1112808541.jpg

for the most part all my mods have been felt but not seen, and reversable. i was afraid to touch much on my car at 1st, it was a 25 y/o car with 63K miles. very clean, but hanging around here will cure you of that quickly. my car looks bone stock, except for recent install of race type seats.

i like the suspension, and will like the exhaust work forthcoming, but you'd have to know to notice.

drl911 04-06-2005 09:37 AM

If you're looking for investment options and return on your dollar, buy mutual funds. If you're looking to enjoy your car and please your emotions, modify it in whatever way makes you happy! :D

Dan

Kroggers 04-06-2005 09:47 AM

I am looking for fun, not an investment......

kenikh 04-06-2005 10:06 AM

Make it a super sleeper! Spend the body mod money on getting that motor massaged.

911mot 04-06-2005 10:06 AM

That car looks familiar.
Did you bring it in to where I work a while ago for some alignment and a wheel balance?

If this is the car I remember, I would try to keep it standard or not do anything irreversible because it really is a nice one.

bigchillcar 04-06-2005 10:10 AM

better all original than a 'poser' car..if you go ruf, go ruf all the way..otherwise original.
ryan

Carl83911 04-06-2005 10:15 AM

MODIFY IT!! BUT Keep the original parts. If you ever decide to sell, you can always put the originals back. and sell the upgrades as options.

Eric Mckenna 04-06-2005 10:22 AM

Yep change it up make it YOUR car..

Kroggers 04-06-2005 10:24 AM

Hay 911mot, where do you work? I might have had my care in with you, but do not know??

911teo 04-06-2005 10:26 AM

MODIFY it. Make it yours, make it YOUR dream car.
As said before an SC is a $10k car no matter what... stock or with any mods...

GO WILD!!!!!!

911mot 04-06-2005 10:59 AM

You can make it look like mine. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1112815810.jpg

Kroggers 04-06-2005 11:34 AM

I could... But then it is not an sc :o) BTW - Nice Car!!

Mysterytrain 04-06-2005 12:05 PM

Its a shame to hack a nice original car..ask the 356 guys. I've got the same vintage and I am the second owner for the last 20 years. I try very hard to keep it the way it was, at least on the surface. The 3.0 is now a 3.2 SS..it has footwell blowers where there weren't ones. But it still looks like a 78. The people on this board are evil, yep, evil doers[ can't remember what jerk coined that term]. They will lead you down the path of modification. You think your tough and you can handle it..just one hit for the rush..maybe a ruf valance. But you will soon be pimping your wife for the cash to feed your habit. Take the high road, keep it stock. Your wife will thank you.

epbrown 04-06-2005 01:10 PM

My opinion is: if you intend to keep the car until you die or its totalled, modify it to your heart's content. If you think you'll sell it on, if there's another Porsche you hope to switch to somewhere down the line, and - most important - if your mods are cosmetic rather than performance related, leave the car alone. Flares on your 911T with 3.6 for wider tires so you can do better on the track = good. Flares on your 911T with 2.2 because you wish you had a turbo = not good.

I totally agree with this statement. I came here with a nice totally stock 88 Carrera just 1 year ago...

In a couple of weeks my car will look like a 934, will have a 3.6 engine and 9.5' and 11' wheels...

If you are weak the dark side will seduce you... and then there is no turning back.

In the infamous words of MikeZ - A stock car sucks. Make it yours - there are lots of improvements for 70's and 80's technology.

_________

And if everyone were to become stock freaks, Pelican Parts would be out of business.

Kroggers 04-07-2005 07:49 AM

I am thinking that for now I will retain the original sc look, and upgrade the mechanics. After all I got the sc, as I really like the way it looks.

Cookie Porsche 04-07-2005 08:16 AM

Paal,

It's your car. Plenty of SC's around so why not make it a bit personal? Removing the bumpers is easy and should you later in life regret you just put the car back to standard.

Now that's was easy.

I did the same. Bought SC, then replaced bumpers, did the brakes, then the suspension, oh and the seats. Then we did the wheels and the motor, then gearbox and so it went. Today the car is MINE (actually it's for sale) and it will never be an SC again.

But it is really the best 911 in the world.

SO - just change the bumpers.

Regards

Tom

Kroggers 04-07-2005 08:23 AM

Thank you Tom, do you have any pic's of your SC??

911teo 04-07-2005 08:37 AM

Tom MY 911 will be the best 911 in the world :D :D :D

Trust me - this car was 100% original in '99. Today only the windscreen and the colour (stickers are gone) is standard!

Stretching the theme maybe - but awsome and fun. Trust me, this car will eat most.

Regards
Tom

I recently sold my boxster to try a 911...Since I couldn't afford the year/options I wanted, I got the best I could afford and am slowly (as the wallet & wife will allow) adding modifications to get it where I want....
I have an 84 3.2 targa that is getting:
C2 body updates (half done)
993 door panels (gong in this weekend)
boxster seats (already in, love them)
S. Wong chip (already in, wow!)
I am going to convert it to a cab in a few weeks....(as soon as I learn how to weld)

All ideas I have either gotten or learned how to do from the esteemed knowledge base found on this board....(thanks)
The way I figure it, as long as the work is all done professionally and top notch, it shouldn't affect the value much..

Chris

Kroggers 04-07-2005 08:49 AM

Hi Tom, where in the world are you (that does not look like a US reg to me??) I have tried to locate the same style front bumper and valance, and can only find suppliers in the US - can you point me to a supplier in Europe?

Other wise i would/will change it to suit me and my tastes.
go for the mods!
