White stripe down middle of car
Just wondering what is the better way to go as far as putting two 1' wide white stripes from from to back on a 911? Is paint or decal better and why? Any rough ideas on prices.
Thanks, David |

I'm a big fan of stripes. There is a thread on stripes somewhere here.

I'm another fan of the front to back stripes. Is 1" wide enough? Decals are easily removed it you decide you don't like it.

Sorry about that, Argeo. I hope I didn't offend you. I didn't realize that stripes were that popular. I guess maybe on an old racecar they might be cool.

This looks good, at least on an early car.

That does look good. I was one of the ones that had a thread going on stripes. I'm using one wide and solid stripe down the hood and engine lid.
You have to be careful how you do 2 stripes. It might come out looking like a Dodge truck. |

I thnk nose-to-tail sripes on a 911 look awesome. Color choice is key, of course. White is probably not the best choice for most colors.
I think paint is the way to go, although decals offer a chance to try before you buy.

Old theory about a racing stripe was that it should go right over the driver's head and be used as a sight line for the driver. Apparently this was to determine whether or not the car was tracking in a straight line. Don't know if this was actually done for the reason stated.

Just my opinion....stripes look great but like Jack said color is key. If I do it I'm going with decals.

The color scheme goes as follows:
Two white stripes, approx. a foot each running front to back not covering bumpers. Approx. 6 inches apart. I am copting the color scheme from a picture of a 74 Carrera RS. I'll try to dig up again and post. Car will be either arrow blue or Mexico (flat, non metallic). Fuchs will be a darker blue. The rockers are staying off. Wasn't planning but realized I liked the look after I took off. It will be two stage chromobase. I am a bit concerned about what it will look like with bellow bumpers because the picture I saw had those (I think) RS bumpers. I can always change a few years down the road though. Oh, going from turbo tail to duck. That's what I want to do, well see if it actually happens. I am just about at Primer stage. David |

On the linked pic, it looks like either the stripes (more probably) or the hood crest is off center. The driver's side stripe is closer to the hood crest.

Argeo, I own a sign company and we do a lot of fleet vehicle graphics. For anything about 2-3" wide or less, I'd choose vinyl, wider than that I'd choose paint. Because of the compound curves of the body work, it will be difficult to maintain an even gap between wide stripes when using vinyl - they'll probably want to taper together toward the ends. Much easier to control when masking for paint. Also, both the cast and calendered vinyls will probably have a slightly imperfect finish when first applied. This settles out with exposure to heat from the sun, but it won't be as glossy as paint for a while.

Thanks guys.
Sounds like paint is the way to go. I was just looking for a effective cheaper alternative. Paint sounds like the way to go. David |

Good luck on the stripes. I did some on a 65 shelby and it was alot of tape on... tape off.... untill they were finally right.
Alot of it had to do with different widths in different locations. On a shelby the stripes on the valance are a little smaller in width and then the hood is different and the roof and so on. This gives the car a lower appearance. Make sure you take alot of time in this process. You don't want to step back later and see somethings a little off wonce paint is applied ![]() |

If you're not certain as to how it will look, or if you're even hesitant on the color, I'd suggest starting with the vinyl. You can always paint down the road. Relatively speaking, a $300-500 dollar vinyl job is cheaper than a repaint if you're not satisfied down the line. Wavey may be able to confirm a rough estimate on what a vinyl job might cost.
