New here - Need help re 930s turbo
Hi I'm a newbie here and a total Porsche novice. I was referred to this site by a fellow Elisetalk (Lotus) member.
I have first refusal on a 1988 930 turbo factory slant nose cabriolet. It is the 25th anniversary model (89 model year) although I've no idea how that differs from the regular version. Based on the small amount of research I've done I see that there are both factory and aftermarket versions out there, with the factory versions being more desirable. The seller, who is a family friend, has assured me that this is definitely a factory slant nose. I have no reason to disbelieve him, however I'm not 100% sure that he is 100% sure (if you get what I mean). Again, from research I noted several things that would confirm factory v's aftermarket and I checked these out on the car, but I'm still confused. This is what I know: - The VIN has a subscript '5' after the '93' - Oil coolers behind the rear air intakes ? - All steel nose - 7" & 9" wheels - Log book/Service manual has '505' option listed but the option sticker is missing from under the hood, however the paint code sticker is there - Is this a tell-tale sign ? I've looked for the central linkage for the headlamp pop-up, but I'm not really sure where this would be or what to look for. I definitely saw a link rod (appx 12") next to the LH headlight but I couldn't see anything on the RH headlight mainly because there was some sort of plastic cover in the way. Similarly I didn't see anything down the center of the interior hood but as I said above I'm not sure what I should be looking for. Can someone direct me to a photo of the factory headlight linkage set up ? Other info that may help - color is v. dark blue, engine/transmission code is 93068-68J-93036 (I think I read that the transmission was changed on the factory model in 1989), locking differential, electric cabriolet top. I would greatly appreciate any help you guys can give me. thanks Alan |

Welcome to the board, I can't help answer your specific questions... but I am sure SOMEONE here will be able to chime in.
Post some pics of the car in question.

Hi Alan and welcome to the board. The serial number won't tell you if the car is factory or not. Sometimes you can call Porsche with the vin and they will tell you if its a factory car or not. Call 800-Porsche.
I have a 1987 factory slantnose and the headlight bar is near the very front of the trunk area and also linkages under the fiberglass housings to each headlight. My Service book has the other part of my sticker that is under the hood and it says "505" also. Please post some pictures. Here is a link that can answer some other questions. http://vista.pca.org/stl/911slant.htm Hope this helps some.

Welcome to the board. If you post some pictures would help a lot; but regardless, the main thing is to enjoy the car and have fun!

The oil cooler behind the right rear air duct is a good indication that it's a real S. Here is a link that will show you the headlight linkage: 930S Rear Air Duct Options (Slant Nose)

Oil cooler behind the right air intake. The slats are wooden
![]() Pop up headlight mechanism. There does appear to be a metal rod linkage running along the front interior face of the front trunk ![]() |

Leiko its looks to be real from the pictures. The car looks really nice. I haven't seen a factory slant nose in that color before. Did you find the other cover for the linkage in the trunk or is it missing? If you need to check on prices for this car your welcome to pm me and I will compare with some info that I have. Good luck.

![]() This was my first experience driving a Porsche, and I have to admit it took some getting use to the pedal set up with them being off-set to the right. Also found the clutch pedal to take a lot more effort than I'm use to (probably since it's all mechanical). The car behaved impeccably both on the freeway and around the twisties. It certainly felt heavier than my Lotus Elise but it felt rock solid around the twisties, and man when that turbo kick in ![]() ![]() It's a really nice car and basically all stock except for the stereo. I've just got to convince myself that it's what I really want. I have to admit that my main interest in it was due to the rarity of this model, but now I've driven it I think the fun-factor is tempting me even more. |

leiko, does this have a 5 spd (G50/50) in it? It should for a true '89. That would make it ultra ultra rare. They are hydraulic-actuated systems, should be smooth and not too heavy. I've driven an elise and not much is as light and street legal except the old 7's. What color is yours, I've been seeing alot of them around my area on a daily basis. Gotta love So Cal

Wow - rare and double rare... Not many "s" not many cabs - really not many dark blue... Does it have the 4 speed or 5 speed - having the g-50 would make it the most desireable... Sweet...

Unfortunately the car has 4 spd transmission which also took some getting use to. So, what's the story with the G50 ? Was it an option or did it just supercede the 4 spd?
89turbocabmike - The Elise is lazer blue. Amazingly fun car if can put up with the ingress/egress & the compliment of small rattles and squeeks. |
