When warm, factory spec for idle is about 950. On my engine, the car just seems to pick up easier if I keep the idle just over 1000.

You mean the adjustment on the distributor correct, the one that control the air plate. First, if you smell gas, let the car sit for a while. Do you know which way you were turning CW or CCW? There is some special rule on this that should get you in the ball park to at least get it running. Don't so this but it was something like turn all the way until in stops CW, then turn counter clockwise 2 times. I can't remember the specifics. Don't sweat it, someone will chime it. This happened to me a couple years ago.
Oh, when you do get it running again, adjust fully when the car is at operating tempature. If you adjust cold, things get thrown off when the car warms up and the AAV and the WUR change due to the tempertures. Oh, some guys adjust with the motor running, I don't incase it backfires. Your call. Good luck, David |

Oh, the idle adjustment. I think it is CW to richen and CCW to lean out. I would let the car sit for a while and then turn CW all the way until it stops. Then turn CCW maybe two turns and try starting. If it doesn't work, go another half and repeat. When the car does run, again get to operating temperature and adjust accordingly keeping track of which way you turned and how far 1/4, 1/2 3/4....
Good luck. |

Idle adjustment (big slot screw on side of throttle body) does not affect mixture. CCW raises the idle. Mixture control ( 3 mm allen screw down in top of fuel dist) does. CCW = leaner.

Sorry, my bad. It has been a while. What I said still applies about trying to adjust though.
