Dumb Caliper Rebuild Question

I couldn't tell when I popped off the dust boots on the pistons, but do the retaining rings go on the outside of the boot (real easy to do) or do they somehow go on the inside?

I have the calipers on the car, ready to bleed...just remembered how many people complained about it.

thanks

retaining rings on outside.
on rear caliper rebuild, keep piston about 1/4" sticking out, easier to get dust boot and retaining ring on.
on fronts, push piston all the way down.
no air needed on rear piston removal, use 2 flathead screwdrivers, pry out pistons under the lip area.
