My father-in-law's '73 911T. Had some serious problems after sitting stationary in his driveway for over 5 years. Here are some before pictures.

No, as a Mainiac we already assume you and the car are tough and do not need fru fru like a garage.
From the before pic, it looks like you win w/o any extra points anyway. How many years? |
Very, very nice Steve.
Questions: -what is in the place of the rear reflector? -how much (if any) of the undercoating was burnt off? or did it just turn into a gooey mess? |

I don't have any pics yet. I have been slowly tearing down my 911 for the past four weeks. I painted a 65 912 a few years ago. I must say my 911 is a bit more complicated. My only concerns is that I'm going to have problems with reassembly. Depending on how soon I can get this thing done I will try to get some pics to you.

You'll have to wait another year for the after. |

Randy-
Jeeze... Long Maine winters, high taxes... I thought sure I'd get points for the no garage thing. Time into the project. 3+ years. Of course it really isn't ever finished. Tim K- I made a laminated acrylic panel to replace the rear reflector to keep a little of the old look with separated tail lights, but have the option of installing the reflector if I want to change the look. Even though it looks like it had been on fire... Most of what was there was water damage (and mice). I tried to leave as much of the undercoating in place as I could. You know you're in trouble when you take the carbs off, and the intakes are full to the top with water. I did have to get another engine. |
What a great thread. It warms my heart to see so many 911s saved!
Cheers! |
You Guys are an inpiration ...! Keek them coming.. A lots of work and dedication project 911
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAA........!!! VicSmileWavy |
The 1975 911S Targa went from Copper Brown Metallic to
Marine Blue Metallic - a more recent Porsche color. It matches the tan interior great. |
Bobboloo, are those evidence markers?
|
For those of you willing to share, I would love to know what you spent, and how much of the work you did yourself. From the pictures above I would think the least any of those folks spent would be around $20k.

now my targa: we took a copper 77 targa and changed it to dark aubergine (92 ford color), looks a lot like yours in the pics. did door jambs, underside of hood and trunk as well. i did all the work myself, including welding, and did the final paint at a Vo-Tech high school paint booth. figure cost of materials was $700, and around 120 hours labor (rust in rocker, both front fenders were swiss cheese).
|
I spayed the car and rebuilt the engine myself:
Engine rebuild: $3500 (upgrades included, 964 cams, 9.3:1 pistons, backdated heat exchangers). Probably 200hrs Body: $1000 ($500 for the paint, $200 fender). Probably about 300hrs. I have spent $12,000 in total, including the purchase of the car, to get it to where it is now. Don't regret a thing!!! I tip my hat to you all. Lemme tell ya, it is easier to maintain a car than it is to resurrect one! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat.gif

"Grandpa's hammer has been in the family for 50 years, now. Of course, we've replaced the head twice, and the handle three or four times, but it's still Grandpa's hammer."
In the same vein, I got this car in 2000: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1114105822.jpg And after a lot of work, and one big accident, it ended up like this: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1109834133.jpg (Photo by Zach Mayne) I'm pretty sure the gas flap is still original. |
