Changing spark plugs

Ok, I've been doing a bit of research here and I'm going to attempt to change my plugs. Thing is, I don't have the factory tool and cannot get one in time for the job.

I've read that some guys do it without the tool. I know the "tape the socket to extention" thing but can anyone give any other advice or tips?

I have the factory tool, but I use a socket on an extension with an air ratchet. When going to install I start the plug by hand then switch to the air ratchet.

I use a craftsman plug socket, and a 3 inch extention that I tape to it. Make shure the tape is close to the drive hole, don't get it to thick or it will bind up on the head. I use a 3/8 drive flex rachet and break the plug free and the insert a 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor into the extention and turn it out by hand. Take your time on this it's not easy the first time. One other thing, spray so WD-40 on the plug socket when you put the plugs back in. This will let the socket come out alot easier and not get stuck to the spark plug.
Start the plus in by hand, then use the rachet!!!

You can buy extensions with a locking button,they hold the socket on the end.I got mine at Sears.

My socket is too thick to remove the #6 plug. Well actually, it is okay for unscrewing the plug, but then it cannot turn the corner to come out, with the plug in the socket. So then I had to screw it back in (glad it didn't fall out). The factory tool is what I use.

I found that a 3/8" universal joint directly on the socket and then using vaious extension lenghts worked well.

I also ground down the top edges of my socket to keep it from catching on the way out. That's what I did on a Sunday to get the job done.

Or, you could just buy the tool.

I happen to have a picture of the tool I bought on ebay for $20 and to help remove a little mystery it works perfectly on my SC. I use a 15mm ratchet box wrench with it and nothing else is required.

Disclaimer is no AC and backdate heat, so my engine bay is very accessible.

Supe, on the #6 plug I find I can lift that tube that hangs in the way a half inch and that's enough to clear the valve cover with the socket carrying a spark plug.


This measures just under 5.5 inches in length. Klein 21.

I've found that using 3/8" drive with a swivel and two short extensions does the trick. I'm even able to get my torque wrench in there (anal, huh?). Spraying a little silicone lube in the spark plug socket makes for easy on, easy off.
