Help me spend my money! oil cooler+ front bumper Q's

Alright.. i have a huge bastard of a car.

its a 77 ,with a BAE turbo'ed 79 3L motor in it,SC flares and 3.2? front valence(?)

my problem is overheating at the track... big time...

im working on making the rear sheet-metal more air-tight (the piece right behind the motor is only 1\2 on because the boost pipes get in the way..)

you mission should you choose to accept it to make this baby stay cool in 100 degree temps of Arizona track days.

your tools:
right now i have the 28 row brass cooler... and 800$ to spend.

I know my hoods open...but its the best pic i have!

can i pull off a new bumper and oil cooler for this much $$? any other options? I don't think two fender mounted coolers could cut it

i hope your new turbo has not leaned you out to the point of detonation... that what kills most home boost jobs... what do you have for an oil cooler now, just the on engine one?

I just installed a front valance Setrab oil cooler from Elephant Racing. I connected it in series with the existing fender 28 brass cooler and lower the temps in the 930 by 25 degrees. I did the work myself under your budget. I'm in the process of modifying the original front valance to accomodate the cooler, some minor body work, still under your budget.

Nick,

Powerhaus in Scottsdale offers a few different cooler options. Their front mount cooler is pretty stout and should handle your needs easily. The problem is, cooler and lines alone will consume your $800 budget. Maybe give Dave a call and see what he can suggest. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just very happy with cooler I got from them.

the cooler is the $$ part. you can buy factory lines, or watch ebay for long lengths of -12 braided hose and fittings. a few folks sell the adapter to go from the metric cooler to an-12 fittings, such as pegasus and i assume pelican. if you are moving, ie racetrack, you might be able to skimp and not add an electric fan.

Dont mean to hijack the thread but I have noticed a lot of performance cars in Porsche Docs RSR using flexible hoses to the oil cooler. I know the brass/finned ones are supposed to me more efficient, so is the thought that the stock brass ones will not fit/suit the application and the front mounted cooler is enough in the way of cooling that you dont need the brass pipes??
Are the flexible s/s pipes much cheaper? or just easier to fit/configure??
Thanks
Ben

Both cheaper and easier to route. You won't see many SC's or Carrera with s/s lines as they already have the nice brass lines from the factory.

no no no ... my LM1 says 12.5 AFR under boost... that makes me happy.

i have the 28 row brass cooler now.

yea... cash... if i had it flowing out my A** i would be all over body work like 67nin11's. about the only thing our cars have in common aero wize right now is no right mirror!

but i don't... so im still looking for an 800$ solution.

Hey Nick,

I have your solution:

Front spoiler from Rennspeed. $250

Large Fluidyne oil cooler from DartAuto.com.

Fluidyne RSR Style Oil Cooler $349.00
Fits Porsche 911 RSR style front spolier. Heavy all aluminum construction 23"x5.5"x3.25". If you are making serious horsepower you need this cooler.
#DB30618

The Fluidyne coolers are some of the most sturdy and best flowing on the market, they are used by World of Outlaw sprint cars (800hp strung to the very ends of its life )

Then you can get a couple of -12 braided lines made up by a local race shop (or Dave at Dart Auto) to go from your existing hard lines to the cooler. You will also need the metric adapters that screw onto the hard lines for the braided lines (I got mine from The Racers Group).

Here is a pic of the spoiler installed on our car. The cooler that I suggested for you is wider than the one on our car and provides more cooling.

so i have my 250$ front bumper(300$ shipped?)
Fluidyne RSR Style Oil Cooler $349.00

so 700$ish for the hardware... those fitting and lines are tacking on 100$ at least.

i wonder how much painting is going to cost me is black easy to match? it will probably be a ghetto fab track ready job.

that would make it close...

thank you for the reply, I'm now looking in the sofa for any change i can add to this project!

Nick,
I have a used 964 oil cooler with 2 short flex lines(brand new, about 12" in length) I will sell for $300 + shipping. I have not had this cooler on my car(also a 77), I bought it with the intention of putting it in the front fender. It is big and more square in shape than the front fender ones, roughly 11" by 13" in size. It's a big honker, looks like a small radiator.
I am at work and don't have part number or exact size.

Craig

For $800&#177 you should be able to plumb a large B&B front mount in series w/ the existing cooler. No cash left for a bumper means you will need to cut up the existing one.

sheesh! are those B&B's made of gold? im looking for an aluminum one! J\K..

that im a little worried about... the 28 row acts almost like a heat sink once it gets really hot... some people have said to plumb it inline others say not too.

My brother just bought a front bumper and oil cooler from TRE. I'll let you know how is goes. He's had bad luck with the fit of bumper from GT Racing prior.
