Jacking points

OK, I am as green as they come. What is the correct jacking point for the rear my 1977 911? Haynes says not to jack up the engine, but I am sure I have seen the engine jacked on the round plate under the engine.

Thank you for helping a beginner.

Here's a picture that I am sure a lot of you have seen a lot of.

Sorry, I am having trouble with the photo. Maybe the cables are too long to the USA from here.

Yes, of course I'm joking

9elf,

Do a search with the terms jacking points. You will have many, many pages of reading fun to try to see what works for you.

I jack at the engine - just in front of the round plate. Make sure you use a soft jack pad or use a wad of news paper. Make sure you use jack stands! Place them under the ends of the torsion tubes. Depending on what I'm doing, I'll sometimes use ramps as well.

Where abouts in Australia are you?

John, I appreciate your help, but unfortunately I am in need of more. When you say 'just in front of the round plate' do you mean in front - towards the front of the car, or in front - towards the rear of the car?

I know it sounds silly, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought 'in front' could mean different things to different people.

Also will you be down for the porsche club run at darlington park on saturday? If so, come and say hello.

I believe he meant towards the front of the car.

Nothing sounds silly Kurt is correct, place the centre of the jack pad about 3 inches in front of the sump plate towards the gearbox. Don't be surprised to see the engine lift significantly against the engine mounts before the whole car lifts - this is normal (depending on how old your mounts are).

Yep, I'll be there on Sunday... what car am I looking for?

you can also search up the thread with some pics on it - IIRC, I am on one with Bill V - with a front pic, and he posts re some special jack stand pads - that should give some search terms to find it. Can't recall if it had rear stuff too or cited to it; but many threads are out there.
