It's been covered a few times. I hit the search button and looked for "red and black relays" and came up with a bunch of threads. One of which is - black and red relays?

Hope it helps

The red relays are for inductive loads in order to prevent the contacts from burning out from the induced reverse high current induced when the contact opens. A reverse bias diode is put in the circuit that cancels the back current when the relay contacts open.

Cheers,

Joe
