Steering Clicking Noise.....

I am about to dismantle my steering unit to investigate the source of the 'clicking noise' as you initially turn the steering wheel. The play and the noise have become very noticeable lately. What's the best way to isolate the u-joints from the steering rack for mechanical inspection?

Any suggestions, recommendations, ideas, highly appreciated. Thanks.

Tony

have you checked the replaceable bushing at the top of the steering column shaft right behind the setering wheel?

When I first got my car it had a knocking when I turned the wheel. The noise apeared at the same point each time I turned the wheel. It turned out to be the u-joints. The shafts had backed out of the u-joints a bit and subsequently the u-joint was rubbing on the chassis at certain points in their revolution. I accessed them from the luggage compartment and reseated the shafts in each of the u-joints. They are all accessible from on top. It requires pulling some covers and heater/blower components but it made a world of difference.
