Good + Cheap floor jack
Is there anything decent out there that can go from around 3 inches to 20+?

Harbor freight sell a 2.5 ton that will go from 3 to 24 inch. I paid $99.00 on sale about a year ago. Since then I have done a least 10 engine drops with it ,and it WORKS GREAT

Tab, as you just got a lift, you should graciously give your floor jack away!

I have a full size (3 ton?) from Sam's club, I think I maybe paid $50 for it. Has a padded lifting pad on the top, which I like. Doesn't slowly bleed down like the Craftsman jack my dad has, definitely showed me the virtues of jack stands though. I've used my cheapo on everything from full size trucks to Porsches, several years and going strong.

After seeing several cheap jacks that didn't last very long, I waited until Sears had a sale, and got a 3-ton Craftsman with stands for $99. I am very pleased with it so far. It does bleed down nicely, which is a huge plus.

Yes, I agree, looks for jacks with a controlled descent rate. My cheapo drops the car like a brick. Let us know what you purchase.

HArbor Freight has a long frame 2.5 ton jack for about 160 US. lifts to about 30 inches - great for shop work.

my next floor jack is gonna be a decent one. no more made in china jacks. (i apologize, to my people). i have to admit, i mis-use jacks. the worst is sticking it into a hole beneath a stump to jack it out of the ground, or my homemade fence post remover (no jackhammering concrete needed
) i figured i better get a good one. i found a US jack at a tool shop for $190.

I ended up getting an aluminum jack from harbor frieght. It was about $130 for the jack and 4 jack stands.
It lifts from around 2 1/2 Inches to around 17 inches.

that jack is good but will not last forever. it's great to take to the track because it's light, but if you use it a lot in the garage I would recommend something a little nicer. see what you think.

I second the Sam's club jack. Have had it for about 1.5 yrs and it works great.

I've got a couple of big cast iron clunkers that I never use, An aluminum H/F has worked fine for me for seveal years, no leakdown, and gentle a drop.
