I really like 928's. They are my second favorite p-car, but unless you are loaded I'd avoid them. You can get lucky, but they were some of the most complicated p-cars in their day and are probably still really complicated. Tons of wiring and electronic stuff to break. Expensive to maintain from what I understand. If you are only just barely able to afford it then you probably can't really afford it. I think you'd be better off with a 911 which isn't actually cheap, but is probably more so on average than a 928.

It's not the mechanical stuff that's so much of a problem with a 928. If you are really picky about your interiors....a 928 will drive you crazy and into the poorhouse. I just sold my 928 S4 since it was competing with my 930 for attention.

Too bad they never built that convertible. That would have been the ultimate Porsche cruise machine.

Well don't expect to not go insane after you get one.
First you will obsess over whether she's running perfectly, or if you washed all the bugs off. Oh, did I not wax it last week? Why can't I find a parking space where it won't get dinged? Where did all these oversized SUVs come from and why are they on my bumper at the light? Should I go back out to the garage to make sure she's still there? Gee, did I hear a creak or a rattle just now? Did that kid just yell out "cool car"? Or did he say, "old fart"? Should I hide my keys from would-be burglars? Should I really spend $200+ on a new set of plug wires? Should I sleep in the car tonight? Keep it stock? Or let the mods begin?
Good luck...hope you can get your p-car soon so you can enjoy your new insanity.

I just bought one (see sig). I researched the model for over a year before deciding to jump on one, and everything you said is correct. They were Porsche's flagship model at the time and outrageously expensive. They were also the most technologically advanced car in the world at its introduction, and immensely complex with every bell and whistle you can think of. A completely different animal than a 911. It is a very difficult car to work on, even for pros. Sorting out electrical glitches can easily cost several thousand dollars and exceed the car's purchase price.

They are cheap to buy, but very expensive to maintain. Clutch replacement is $2k. Timing belt/water pump is $1500 - $2k. Shop rates in most areas range from $100-125/hour. Problem is, the low purchase price lures in the teenagers and financially challenged folks who think they're buying their dream car, and then neglect it and allow it to deteriorate because they either refuse to pay, or are unable to pay, what's necessary to keep it in shape. That's why there are 50 poor or marginal examples out there for every 1 good example. It took me a year to find mine. The only way 928 ownership can be successful is if you either buy the factory workshop manuals and do most of the maintenance yourself, or fork over the big bucks on a regular basis. I plan to do some of each. You have to really love them to own them.
