Unhappy What Happened?

I have only had this 80 sc for 1 month. The car shifted very nicely without anysigns of problems or bad synchros. I replaced the shifter bushings and added a WEVO shift couple and my shifting was very nice indeed. Then yesterday while going uphill at around 60 mph I had trouble getting into gear. After pulling over (in neural) I notice that the car would not go into second.....

My mechanic has told me that there is something broken inside and the transmission will need to come apart before he can tell me more.

What could have happened. There was no signs of worn parts or any indication. Just out of the blue it now needs a rebuild.

What should I do? I mean I will have hime pull the tranny and open it up, but Im not sure if I should have hime do the rebuild or if anyone from this area has any reccomendations? I cant really do this sort of thing myself. Lack of tools and no adequate space to work.

what should it cost? abviously alot will be determined when things are apart.

Thanks for any advice in this matter

How many miles?
The 915 tranny is known for needing full rebuilds around 100K miles especially if someone have been hamfisting it for a while.

Its pretty low millage 70K-although the speedo was changed at some point, by the looks of engine, compression tests and comparing it to similar cars of that year it seems to be around that.

Hate to ask the obvious, but you did check the shift coupler? Didn't come loose did it?

Like Randy said, I would check the shift coupler and linkage before spending big money on a rebuild.

Good luck, David

Thanks. I did check the coupler. It was the first thing i checked because I had recently put in the WEVO. I readjusted the coupler several times. The thing is it goes in to all of the shift pattern except 2nd.
Also, with the clutch disengaged and the engine idleing, I get a shuddering through the shift rod.....

Brett,

It wouldn't hurt to drain the gear oil and look for metal debris ... and pull the shift fork cover #5 in the diagram below. Look for a loose or damaged guide fork #5 ... it is common for the nuts or studs to come loose.

Hey Brett, Have Tom Amon from MobileWorks go take a look at it. 408-429-0545. He has 30 years of exp. and knows his tranny back to back..Price wise, no where near a shop!!! but has all the knowledge...
Try him, i know you will be pleased......

Take a blast along La Honda after you get this sorted out, that'll charge your enthusiasm and your batteries!
