Sorry to hear. I have been following this build since day one. I have a similar story to yours and it all worked out. (Get car running -> car gets damaged -> Car is back and better than ever!)
Best of luck to you. Brent ______ '70-911 |
Hard luck and sorry to hear.
Look on the bright side: it hadn't been painted yet! Keep us posted, ianc |
Hiya folks.
Just a quick update. after my Mountain Drive Terror thread, I decided to go RSR. I have since sourced some beautiful 9 and 12 X 17 Fikse FM 10's, some restoration design rear turbo flares, and some RSR front and rear bumpers from a private guy in California. It all needs to be fitted and welded, but it's certainly coming along. How about those wheels??? (I'm still drooling) They are currently running Yokohama tires...315's in the rear. (!) I'll be running 275's for autocross though. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165793655.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165793711.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165793790.jpg |
those wheels look nice...
I'm not an expert here...but I would bet that the tape you are using for those flares is not 100 mph tape. I would either use...
1) more tape..or 2) wider tape...or 3) some other form of adhesion... ....just my 2 sense. Is your motor big enough to get the rubber at the rear to spin? You may need to go to a 3.2 or 3.6? :D |
Well, I read a lot of the postings on how to adhere the fenders. Some people weld, which requires a lot of skill and patience, neither of which I possess. Then I read about the 3M glue, which requires a lot of careful measurement and clamping. Nah...too much work. So, I thought duct tape would really get me about 90% of the way there, for a lot less money and time. I'll probably just slather some bondo over the tape and on the seams, and you'll never know the difference. It will look just like Jack Olsen's car when it's done. I swear.
:) |
Bondo requires too much skill. I'd use spackling compound.

Looks great! :D |
thanks Jim. I'm excited about it. I was worried the gigantor wheels wouldn't fit under the RSR flares, but there was no problem at all. The rear end of the car looks ridiculous now!

oops. wrong thread.

Hey,
Nathan here, how much were your new wheels?? I really do like them. I have a set of 16*6's I am having 9 and 11 made either stretch or the 3 piece deal. Thanks Nathan |
nathan,
I got them used from a Pelicanite. Don't ask on the price...it was really, really good. :) |
well thats good news, Congrats. I still need the rear bumper, hood ducktail. Im gettin ready to call your guy that you told me about. Where are you on your car???
|
I've been stuck with horrible weather with my car. Right now, I'm waiting for my 100mm wheel studs to get those fat new Fikse's mounted in the rear. Then I have to finish my rockers, weld on the flares, find some front flares, fit the bumpers, sand, paint.
you? |
Resubscribing. Sorry. I clicked the deadly "unsubscribe from all threads" link.

UPDATES!!!
Ok...I made some good progress today. I finally got my 100mm studs in, and was able to *finally* (I've been waiting since October) mount the Fikse's. My goodness they are cool! I also started the preliminary fitting of my bumpers and flares. The rear flares amazingly wrap right around the 315 Yokohomas in the rear. Very impressive.

but wait, there's more...
For the experts out there...how does this fit/alignment look to you?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1172964078.jpg Gratuitous "butt" shot. I can't wait. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1172964127.jpg 2 cool things: 1. I had removed the muffler so I could fit the rear bumper. Holy $hit the car sounds amazing with no muffler! It's a screaming banshee! I wish I lived in the country...I'd just put two straight pipes on the thing and be done with it! 2. I recently started a new company for Porsche enthusiasts. (Check my sig) You know the coolest part about it? Since the car will be my #1 form of advertising, I can *write* the rest of the restoration off. Whoo hoo! :) Now that I can get the car in and out of the garage, I'm hoping the progress will be quicker on getting the rockers done. It looks like I'm going to have to patch in a spot of sheetmetal on the passenger side too, but that's ok I guess. |
I'm in the market for some steel front flares, btw.

There you go, looking good. I find that just assembling the car is so motivating to move ahead through a lull in progress. I was at a stand still for a while and then fitted my car with the rear wheels which are a 3 piece BBS 315/50/16. That got me going. I am now doing a serious interior cleaning job and then in 2 weeks having a new front suspension pan, outer rockers and rear seat buckets.
