Starting 3.2 for first tym in about 1 year
Hi,
I'm about to take delivery of a 1986 3.2 carrera that has been sitting in storage for about 1 year. Besides oil change, is there anything i should do before i start it? |

Do you know if a fuel stabilizer was added before putting it away? If not, you might want to drain the gas tank, and refill with fresh fuel before you attempt to start it.

In order for the engine to "stay golden", I would also suggest you ensure you have a fully charged battery, with which you can use the starter motor to turn round the engine for a while ENSURING you have REMOVED the fuel pump fuse (or the spark plugs). The engine will turn under the starter motor power (it will not RUN, because it does not receive any fuel, or because there are no spark plugs...), motor oil will be circulated and splattered everywhere inside the engine, so that the insides become nicely oiled. After that, you put the fuel pump fuse back, enabling the engine to actually fire on gasoline power.
This has the advantage that the engine will not be actually fired on "dry" engine internals, which is not good.

yer, thats easier then turning the motor over by hand huh.
Is the fuse labelled? or can you give me the fuse designation? Also where is the fusebox located? |

Gas Drain:
I followed John Walker's advise and all worked perfectly. "Rick, To activate the fuel pump, use a jumper wire to give battery power to the fuse. it's the 3rd fuse on the 10 fuse block. You'll hear it come on. The fuel rails clamp the injectors to the intake manifold on both sides of the engine. There's a cap nut on the end of the left one that's easy to access. Be careful not to loose the ball bearing under it. Just slip a 4 foot hose over the threads and use a hose clamp. Then proceed to fill your 5 gal gas can. jw" Life will be easier if you have an assistant at the fuse to turn the fuel pump on and off. Also, the fuse box is located under the front hood at the driver's side trunk wall. Simply remove the black plastic lid to access the fuses. The lid also has the fuse/circuit designations.

Here's what i would do....
1. Drain all the fuel (there is a drain port in the fuel tank) 2. Drain all the oil 3. remove the spark plugs, spray some oil down the cylinders then crank the engine over (probably not needed on a Carrera though) 4. use a good fuel injector cleaner when running it (I use Lucas fuel injector cleaner) 5. Check valve adjustment |

Where is there a "drain port" on the gas tank.
Here's a good thread on draining a gas tank: How to drain Gas from '85 911 tank? Also, a new fuel filter should be installed for the first start. There could be lots of crud in the old one.
