Clutch Problems after Install
Installed new clutch and flywheel. Pedal feels good, travel adjustment set to .98 in. but its hard to get in gear and feels like the clutch is slipping when 1st is engaged. What could be the problem? All new parts except for the fork. Thanks.

Bump. I felt the parts were installed properly at the time, is it possible to install something incorrectly that might cause this type problem? Thanks.

what's the .98 thing? 1st adjust a bit of clearance, just enough to feel, between the long and short levers under the trans, then adjust the cable sheath nuts to get an engagement point 3-4" off the floor as you let the pedal out.

The .98" is basically the stroke of the cable as measured at the trans when the clutch is depressed. This is per Haynes instructions and Waynes 101 projects chapter 11.
I am also concerned about the clutch slippage with the pedal released and clearance between the two levers on the transmission. That just should not happen. Thank you all.

ok, you have clearance between the levers right? how far off the floor does the pedal travel before the car begins to move?

Right, I have about .040 clearance between the levers. There is about 7 inches total travel of the clutch pedal, I would estimate the clutch graps halfway or slightly beyond - maybe 3.5 to 4.0 in.

Re: Clutch Problems after Install
Quote:
Might it be the transmission linkage? When I installed my new clutch and put the engine back in I placed the transmission in first gear and it lugged the engine like I was taking off in third gear. I thought "great, I messed up the clutch cable adjustment". I decided to check the shift linkage in the tunnel first (because I was nicking reverse going from 5th to 4th) and after a slight adjustment.....no more "lugging" in first gear. Phil
