Rust Protection for Stored Parts
Any recommendations for a spray on rust protection for stored engine parts or any parts for that matter?? Didn't there used to be a waxy type material used for this??

How about just painting them with Rustoleum primer, or something similar, and then stripping the paint when it comes time to use the parts?

Unfortunately primer isn't moisture proof. It will rust through. If they are internal engine parts, you probably will have to wipe on a layer of oil and store them in fairly air tight plastic. If they are external, stripped and to be painted later, you can put ln a light coating of metal prep. If they are magnesium parts, you can spray on corrosion block, which you can get from a marine supply store.

This is what WD-40 was originally intended for. I find it completely stops all rust on parts stored in an unheated garage.

gun oil? CLP?
I think WD-40 would work as a protectant, but doesn't it get sticky/tacky? Or go military and get some Cosmoline!

WD-40 is a good idea! I just checked their website, and they have a BIG BLAST can now, that seems perfect for what we're discussing here.

I use Cosmoline, got it at goodson or LPS-3 works well for a spray type and lasts 2 or 3 years, You can also pack it in some desicant

Cosmoline should last a lot longer than 2-3 years!
I've had rifles 60+ years old packed in cosmoline about that long come out looking great!

"LPS-3 is good for about 2 to 3 years" outside, Cosmoline is better, I also have some Allison aircraft engine parts still in the stuff from the 40's

Word.
Cosmoline is loathed by us old arms collectors because it's a b*tch to clean out of old rifles, but it does to a great job preserving and protecting the metal.

If possible keep them in a dehumidified area too...
