71 window regulators
To lower my 1971 e windows, I must push down the rear while I crank. What is the repair part or procedure for this?

I think you replace the whole she-bang with a newer scissors mechanism - there is a 1/2" thick paperback book from PAG that discusses this and other things... forgot the name of it right now
Tech Ref. Guide? Tech Ref. Manual?

The newer scissors type linkage is nice, but may not be necessary in this case. The U-shaped channel may have loosened its grip from the window bottom. Remove the door panel and take a look. Sometimes, the window guide felt becomes distorted from wear or whatever and places undue stress on the linkage as it tries to slide the window up and down.
Hope this helps, Sherwood |

And if it needs extensive work, send it to Stoddard. They will rebuild it.

Your pivots in the regulators are probably broken. Easy replacement about $20 per pivot. The pivots hold the spring that negates the weight of the window when winding it up. Of course you have to take the door apart to pull the regulator. I have done it so many times its about a 4 hour job on my 69. Good Luck.

Jim,
I experience different symptoms. When the spring pivot breaks (it happens eventually), the linkage collapses and the window drops to the bottom of the door cavity. YMMV, Sherwood |

Often what happens is the lubrication gets dirty and dries out and this keeps the window from moving forward smoothly on its' runners, as it's lowered, so this causes it to hang up on the back of the window frame.
I wouldn't doubt that alot of these early cars haven't had the runners lubricated since they left the factory 35 years ago.

I just had this happen (pop and window falling down, handle just turns with no reisistance). Do I need to remove the window frame to get the regulator out to inspect/repair or can I remove it via the large opening in the bottom of the door?

Sherwood,
Thanks. Yesterday I removed the regulator with the glass in place. We'll see my success in getting it back in once I replace my damaged pivot. Another question, once I insert my new pivot into the regulator, How do I lock it into place? Is it just a press fit or do I need to mushroom the small end? ![]()

Mushroom the small end or it will pop off at athe most inoportune time. After installing both doors in my restoration I had to go back into them because the regulator came off the back of the pivot , separating and popping the spring out. One good thing, I can disassemble a door in less than book time now.
