A short film featuring the 911

Here is a short film that I made featuring a pair of 911s. I thought some of you might enjoy it.

(Higher quality, downloadable version for Quicktime 6+ here)

Cheers,

-Paul

About 3 weekends of shooting, 3 weeks of editing and about 3 months of coding and animating.

I wrote a program which downloaded about 1 million little satellite images and then stitched them all together into one big image which was about 4.6GB in size. It would be 25' x 25' if you printed it out

Nice! Looks really good! Did you shoot in 24p? What did you edit in? Any Magic Bullet treatment in post? Great job on the satellite stitching too.

I'm actually working on some ideas for doing a short as well. I shot a bunch of test footage at the POC event this past weekend and will hopefully have something cut together in a couple of weeks, or as time permits. My guess is a few people on here will see themselves in it.

Thoroughly enjoyable little film. Makes me wish my Crystal Method disk hadn't've got ripped last year though.

I built the camera rigs with 80/20 and 6" woods power grip suction cups (they're usually used for installing glass). They're very friendly to the car's finish, you just have to be careful that you don't build a rig that torques the body panel (or window) too much. I accidentally cracked my windshield

I used 2 high res cigar cameras with interchangeable wide angle lenses. I also used a Canon XL1S and a Panasonic DVX100

Editing was all done with Final Cut Pro on a powermac G5. Animation was done using Shake. Image acquisition and stitching was done with PHP. It took roughly 2 weeks to download the images over broadband and another 36 hours straight for it to stitch them all together. I had to use a special 64bit build for memory reasons (normal 32bit programs can only access 2GB of RAM - this image was 4.6GB).

The final rendering of the satellite scene took about 40 hours to render. Shake lets you use smaller proxy images which I used to map out the animation and get it close to where I wanted it. The proxy images would render much faster than the full resolution image, but it still took a while to get it right

My original plan was to shoot helicopter footage to blend in with the satellite photography, but a complete lack of a budget ruined that for me.

That's very cool. Do you do this professionally? ..or is this a passion?

Someday, I'd like to do this for a living. Julie and I bought a G5 (iMac) just after the new year with iMovie HD. I don't have any good shooting and sound equipment, however. Maybe by the end of this year I'll have a better camera and digital recorder for sound. ..maybe.

I put togethether a couple of quick videos for my brother when he bought his Cayman S. They're here:
http://www.lumpocole.com/doug/greggscaymans/Intro%20Video.html

Very average, but that's how we learn!

Thanks for the info!

I’m really impressed – great job!

I foresee a long and successful career in producing, directing and editing … and Porsche driving.

Best,
Grady

Very cool I like the credits and the effect that you applied at the end.
and some great camera shots.
The time it took you is actually not bad.
Everytime I get hit up to do a video project its amazing that people think you just have to film it then its done. All the detail work takes so much time.
Good work!

Really cool video.

What is 80/20? I understand the suction mounts, but what was the rest of the rigging like for those camera angles?

Jack, 80/20 is the adult version of Erector (see: www.8020.net ).

Very cool product for building stuff, I'm specing (myself) out some items for my trailer made out of 80/20.
