911 starter problem

the last few weeks my starter on our 89 3.2 911 has operated but sounded a little funny. You would start the car and it sounded a bit tinty. Today something has gone wrong. When you turn the car over the starter turns but does not engage the flywheel. You can just hear it spinning. What's wrong?

The bendix gear is not engaging. It sounds like your starter needs to be taken apart and cleaned or re-conditioned. The procedure has been posted here before if your inclined to do it yourself.
