Rear View Mirror Holder Removal

My rear view mirror broke at the holder/bracket glued to the windshield. I want to remove the broken holder and install a new one. What is a safer method to remove the epoxy glue without damaging the windshield?

Would a heat gun do the job safely? Any suggestion, recommendation, or advise is well appreciated. Thanks.

TD

heat gun used carefully/sparingly along with a single edged razor. Double check your windshield for small cracks around that area before you heat it as heat could expand those puppies into a a big dog, which is not a good thing. go slow and don't try to pry the clip off the windshield as that can crack it too. work the razor slowly under the edge and then work your way around it, then press in a little farther and go around again. it should pop off after a couple of revolutions. You may try a little "goo be gone" too but then you'll need to really clean and dry the area before you can get the new one to glue on.

Just a suggestion. Mark the outside of the winshield with a piece of tape where the old clip is located while the old clip is still in place. This way after you clean all the epoxy residue off the inner windshield and have it squeaky clean you can replace the clip in exactly the same spot without having to guess.

Are you sure it's the glue on vs. the clip on style? Not sure what year this changed, but at some point Porsche went to a sliding clip on style mirror.

JP I believe he was referring to the clip that is glued to the windhsield which is the part that the mirror stem slides on. Its the nickel sized thing you see when you look from outside in.

. . . glue-on pad for mirror install . . .

. . . this double stick on pad . . . Were can you get this?? I've used the commercial double sided emblem and moulding rubber strips (from body shop supply house), which eventually fell off, due to mirror's own weight. I need the factory stuff or equivilent strength materials. I cannot glue the mirror base directly to the inner windshield, as in other cars, due to a relief on the base itself. It is NOT totally flush which will accept this self adhesive pad.

What to use and where to get? Dealer I presume? . . . and still available??

Thanks,
Hz
