will an impact wrench save me? OT

ok, moderater give it a few post before moving this, please. (this is where the wrenchers hang out)

thanks.
i am changing out a few components on my steering linkages on my chevy 4x4 S10. first component sent me wimpering. the idler arm. i got it off ok, after grinding down a pitman arm puller a bit. took me two hours to figure that out tho. now getting it back on. the nut keeps spinning the threaded shaft. just like the shock shaft on the rear of our 911's. no way of grabbing anything to hold it still. i have an IR impact that was supposed to get here today, coming in the mail. can i rattle that thing on? or will it simply rattle and spin, just faster? am i flatbedding this?

looking forward, my two inner tierod ends look easy, steering damper easy, pitman arm is gonna be a BEOATCH. i have to remove the steering box to clear a frame crossmember. i may skip it. i actually doesnt look that bad or leaky.

thanks. not enough experience with air tools to predict this. it has been hell. first door ding on the 911 at car parts store, lost my 911 keys in my front yard, utter defeat with car, grease gun fell apart with a brand new tube of grease put in. .....i am quitting till i get the impact.

Yes, the IR ranch will save the day. Did you count how many threads to leave exposed after the wrench is done? It is not a torque calibrated tool, you know.

First door ding, now you can relax and get more.

Ouch (about the door ding).

Vash, try this. Buy a roll of magnetic vinyl ($30 or so). Cut out a piece for each door. Roll it up, toss in trunk. When you park somewhere dicey, it takes 10 seconds to pop the trunk, pull out the pieces, slap them on the door.

I never got a door ding when i used these. Then I got lazy and now have my first ding. Fortunately not a very obvious one. I'm going back to using the vinyl protectors.

The trick is to jam the tapered shaft into the tapered hole hard enough that it gets some grip so the threads won't spin. If you can't hold it there hard enough to get it to stop spinning, you can try clamping them together with a C-clamp or tapping it together with a hammer.

The last time I did this, I used a floor jack to provide sufficient pressure to prevent turning, worked fine while torqing the nut. Use just enough to stop the turning, too much will bend things. Clearance issues can be resolved via blocks of 2x4, 2x2, or 1x1.

Sorry for the hijack Cliff but this is a good idea. John, where'd you buy the mag vinyl?

If it has Zerks, grease them now. That way, you've removed all doubt.
