Why does my car do this?
Yesterday I took my car out to get the rear window fixed (see other post). The car ran great in the morning. Temp was probably about 80F outside. At night, from the get go the rev's were bouncing at idle between 700 and 1000 rpms. Driving home the engine was popping at decel and at stops. The temp outside went up to around 95F. Could the points have something to do with this? My car was having a tough time getting spark at start up. My neighbor adjusted the points but basically eye balled them so they are not precise. The plug wires I noticed a week ago at night show sparks at the distributor if watch with no light (at night). Wires are a year old with probably a thousand miles on them if. How can a car go from running great to so lousy so fast?
Thanks, David |

David, while I don't profess to know the answer, I would assume that the person who would know the answer would need to know the year and 911 model you drive. My engine is somewhat inconsistent as well and I wouldn't mind knowing the answer too....

I think your points are the most likly candidate. Use a dwell meter to set them. You may need to replace them. Your wires may be defective, or perhaps the cap should be replaced, or possibly the wires are not firmly seated in the cap.
You should also do a search re the WUR and also mixture settings, and vacuum leaks, but I would go after the points, rotor and cap first.

I was planning on dropping off tomorrow to a local Porsche mechanic to have my rear window installed. I will have him adjust the points. The cap and rotor should be fine. I have probably only put about 5K on them. The wires are like new but obviously defective. I guess for those I can unscrew from distributor car connectorrs, cut and screw back into the connectors.
I am just amazed at how things can change so fast. Morning good, afternoon bad. Thanks, David |

Why not in the morning but at night?
That sort of points me to the points. I am thinking if it was mixture related whether it is 90 degree or 80 degrees shouldn't throw off the mixture if the engine at both times is running at 80C. Since it was 80C at both times, I think I can cancel it out. Maybe I am wrong. It did it at start up (0C)and never recovered all the way home (10 miles or so). |
