This is my first air cooled car, 1971 911T, and I'm not that familiar with what is considered a normal operating temperature. Yesterday, I was driving around town and ran into some heavy traffic and watched the temp climb to about 2/3's of the distance between 210 and 250. The ambient outside temp was around 75-76. I'm concerned that when the really hot weather arrives, 90-95, the engine temp will be dangerously high and could do some damage to the internals. Do I have reason to be concerned or is this normal?
The car originally had factory A/C and I want to restore it to operating condition. Is this going to create a greater problem? |

Yes you should be concerned. I would first look to see if you have some obstructions behind the fan, like a mouse nest, that is adding to your cooling problems. If everything is in order, I would be adding an oil cooler.

If those temps are correct then you are running a little warm. Check to see that the temp gauge and temp sender (the sender sits low on the right side of the fan) are working and reading correctly. Look behind the fan for crap and rodent build up on top of the cylinders. If you haven't already, purchase Wayne's 101 Projects book, it will tell you how to get behind the Fan/Alternator. An air conditioner will make the car run a little warmer.
