3.2 Won't start!

Hi all

Having trouble with my 3.2 it has just stopped starting, the engine will not even turn over I can hear the solenoid click when I try but the starter will not work. What is the easiest way to check the starter (don't even know where it is!) and if it is faulty is it a straight forward job to remove and replace it?

Many thanks in advance

Take a look at this thread.

The starter is mounted on the passenger side (American passenger side :) ). You'll have to raise the rear end, climb underneath and look up above the axle.

Before messing with it, I strongly urge you to disconnect the battery. LOTS of electrical hazard going on there.

Is the battery good? Check that 1st.

If lights, radio, horn, etc., are good, bettery is working. Hearing the click indicates the battery is providing voltage. Sounds like the starter could be toast.

I had similar a few weeks back. I checked the batter, which provided 12.8V, so I deemed it OK. Next, I removed the leads to the starter, cleaned (almost polished everything) and re-assembled using di-electric grease. So far, no starting problems. The leads were dirty, but I had seen worse.

My engine is an '86 3.2L.

Good luck.

Just because the radio, etc works, doesn't necessarily mean the battery's not at fault. May not be charged enough for start up, but enough for the minor electrical items. Try jumping the battery first. Easy/Free.

Also, maybe someone can comment on the DME relay as the culprit. I've heard this may cause startup/stalling problems, and again, easier to check/change than messing with the starter. The DME relay (plenty of posts, please search) is located under the drivers seat next to the metal DME box. A simple swap w/ a new relay ($35.) may solve your problem.

The "DME" relay powers the fuel pump and the DME itself. I don't think it could be a culprit in this case.
