I just droped my 3.0 CIS engine to find an air leak. Turns out it was the rubber hose between the #1 intake runner and air box. While it's out I was going to do some other things to the car (besides the basic oil seals etc.) and had some questions.
1. The airflow cooling "cowling" that covers the top of the engine is a faded red/pink. It looks like it's fiberglass. Can it be painted? If so, does it need high-temp paint? Also, I read threads about painting/polishing other parts i.e. intake, fan and housing... Do they all need high-temp paint? 2. I've seen pictures of other 911 engines with what apear to be "flexible" fuel injector lines. While the engine is out I wanted to replace those anoying hard metal lines. I've googled till my fingers bleed trying to find those lines. What are they/where can I get them? 3. I'm missing 2 allen bolts that hold down the air mixture unit to the air box. You know, the little spring loaded ones. Pelican parts has the part listed for the 911 turbo but not for the SC. Is there a difference? Can I use any bold or do they need the spring (can't seem to figure out why they have springs anyways)? This was the first time I dropped the engine from a porsche. Wow, what a learning curve! Not very difficult but some definte things that people should know before they do it.... The car must be lifted VERY high in order to pull the engine from under the car. If you don't have a car lift, plan on the engine laying on the ground and sliding it from under it. It took me and my dad a whole day to figure out the physics of how to get the car high enough to get it out. Needless to say, every thread and book I read mention nothing about how high the car really needs to be. The raw clearance of the engine isn't enough, you also must account for jack hight. I managed to do it with big jack stands on all 4 corners. The rear stands, lifting on the rear tortion bar covers are on 4, 1 1/2" concrete blocks. Sketchy to say the least. Don't use a regular engine stand to hold the engine. I have one that is rated for 750 pounds but after reading lots of threads and talking to my porsche mechanic I agree that you're rolling the dice. The bell housing isn't strong enough to hold the wight of the engine without a special mount. Sooooo, save your self time and headache and work on the ground or just buy the right stand (or weld one). It's wicked easy to take off the "top" of the engine i.e. CIS system. I learned (after HALF the components where removed) that just removing the intake runner nuts and a few electrical connections the top comes right off. Took a hole 15 minutes. None of the manuals mention this... I'm sure I'll have many more silly questions, but for now, thanks for your answers in advance.... |
